TEZU : A district-level meeting of the Narcotics Coordination (NCORD) Committee was held in Tezu to review the status of illegal opium cultivation, drug abuse, enforcement under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and rehabilitation measures for affected persons.
During the meeting, Lohit Deputy Superintendent of Police Ojing Lego presented a PowerPoint presentation on the district’s NDPS cases. He said the situation has shown improvement due to strict enforcement, sustained awareness campaigns and the active cooperation of community-based organisations (CBOs).
He urged all stakeholders to take the issue seriously and discharge their responsibilities in a coordinated and time-bound manner.
Addressing the meeting, Tezu Circle Officer Habung Moda said meaningful social change begins with individual responsibility and assured that the district administration would extend full support to efforts aimed at curbing drug abuse and illegal opium cultivation.
He warned that stringent action would be taken against anyone found involved in illegal opium cultivation and sought the active cooperation of Gaon Buras, stating that their close interaction with local communities would be crucial in identifying illegal activities and spreading awareness.
The Gaon Buras appreciated the initiatives of the district administration and assured their full cooperation in combating drug abuse and illegal opium cultivation. They also called for strict action against those involved in drug-related offences.
The meeting reviewed the functioning and challenges of the de-addiction centre, destruction of illegal opium crops, awareness campaigns, rehabilitation measures and other related issues. Participants stressed the need for coordinated efforts involving the district administration, police, health authorities, enforcement agencies, Gaon Buras, CBOs and local communities.
On the occasion, winners of an essay competition organised to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking were felicitated with certificates and awards.
The meeting was attended by the Lohit District Medical Officer, officials from the Health Department, Intelligence Bureau, Tax and Excise Department, Gaon Buras and other stakeholders. (DIPR)
