NAMPONG : The Indo-Myanmar Border Haat at Pangsau Pass was formally reopened on Thursday, marking the revival of a key cross-border trade platform aimed at promoting economic cooperation, improving livelihoods and strengthening people-to-people ties between the two neighbouring countries.
The Border Haat was inaugurated by Trade and Commerce Minister Nyato Dukam in the presence of Nampong MLA Laisam Simai, Adviser to the Trade and Commerce Minister Dr Mohesh Chai, Trade and Commerce Secretary Bullo Mamu, Trade and Commerce Director Toko Togur, Additional Deputy Commissioner Jairampur L. Thungon, 21 Assam Rifles Commandant Col Amit Mane, public representatives, traders and officials.
A delegation from Myanmar, comprising the Town Chairman of Pangsau Town, representatives of the Myanmar Army and Police, the United Tangshang Committee and the local Bazar Committee, also attended the programme.
Addressing the gathering, Dukam highlighted the importance of trade and commerce in driving the economic development of the border region and urged local communities, traders and stakeholders to actively participate in making the Border Haat a sustainable centre of commercial activity.
He also underlined the strategic significance of Pangsau Pass and revealed the government’s proposal to establish a Land Port at Nampong to further strengthen regional trade, connectivity and border infrastructure.
The dignitaries said the revival of the Border Haat would provide local entrepreneurs, farmers, artisans and traders with a platform to market indigenous products, create livelihood opportunities and reinforce the long-standing economic and cultural ties between India and Myanmar.
Following the inauguration, the minister and other dignitaries visited the Border Haat premises, interacted with traders and reviewed the facilities.
They expressed confidence that the revived Border Haat would serve as a catalyst for cross-border trade, cultural exchanges, regional connectivity and inclusive socio-economic development in the frontier region.
