Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya (VKV), Tafragam, observed Universal Brotherhood Day on Friday with a colourful programme commemorating Swami Vivekananda’s historic address at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago on September 11, 1893.
Women and Child Development Minister Dasanglu Pul attended the programme as chief guest, while Lohit Deputy Commissioner Kesang Ngurup Damo was the guest of honour. Lohit SP Thutan Jamba, Tezu ZPM Baplalum Chiba, VKV Tafragam alumni, Gaon Burahs, school management, Principal Manisha Devi, teachers, parents, students and members of the local community also attended the event.
Addressing the gathering, Pul said Universal Brotherhood Day reminds people that despite differences in religion, region, language and culture, humanity belongs to one family. She urged students to uphold the values of peaceful coexistence, compassion, mutual respect and the spirit of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.”
Lauding the contribution of VKVs in providing education, particularly in remote areas, the Minister said the institutions play an important role in developing discipline, character, responsibility and a spirit of service among students.
Referring to Swami Vivekananda’s vision of “man-making and character-building education”, she said the achievements of VKV alumni in various professions reflected the strength of the institution.
“Whatever profession you choose in future, strive first to become a good, compassionate and responsible human being,” she said, while advising students to value their parents’ sacrifices and make the best use of the opportunities provided by the school. She also urged parents to guide children in the responsible use of mobile phones and the internet and encourage participation in sports, reading, cultural activities and community service.
Lohit DC Kesang Ngurup Damo recalled Swami Vivekananda’s historic Chicago address and said his opening words, “Sisters and Brothers of America,” immediately established a bond with the audience and drew global attention to India’s rich civilisation, culture and spiritual heritage. He said Vivekananda’s message of tolerance, harmony and universal brotherhood enhanced India’s prestige globally and remains relevant today.
The programme began with an invocation and ceremonial lamp lighting by Class X students, followed by a welcome address by Principal Manisha Devi and felicitation of the guests. A Universal Brotherhood Song titled Arohi was also released.
The programme featured the Chicago Address by Class IX student Resensi Pul and a presentation on the significance of the day by VKV Tafragam alumna Wijali Manyu Kri.
The cultural segment included a group song by alumni, Vivek Vaani presentations by Liza Kamsi, Diter Bagbi and Lionam Jerang, a Mishmi dance by Class IX students, a group dance by alumni and Jaldeep Asana by Class X students. VKV Tafragam Secretary Sujatha Didi delivered the Secretary’s address.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by alumna and SSG member Timita Namchoom, followed by the Shanti Mantra presented by Class X students. (DIPR)
