ITANAGAR, SEP 11:

The Itanagar Capital Region Child Welfare Committee (CWC) on Friday said a minor girl allegedly subjected to sexual abuse is safe and under its protection, while appealing to the public not to circulate videos depicting the abuse or assault of children on social media.

Addressing a press conference here, CWC-ICR chairperson Taba Zim said the committee received information about the alleged abuse through an anonymous caller on Child Helpline 1098 on September 2. The caller also informed the committee about the circulation of a video purportedly linked to the incident.

Zim said the committee’s immediate priority was to ensure the safety of the child, following which an FIR was registered at the Women Police Station in Itanagar. The accused, identified as Biri Tara, was subsequently arrested in connection with the case, she said.

Referring to separate videos purportedly showing the assault of a minor boy and girl that came to the committee’s notice on September 8, Zim said an additional FIR was registered against the same accused on September 9.

“The child is in the safe custody of the CWC and is protected,” she said.

CWC-ICR member Duyu Apo urged social media users not to circulate, forward or repost videos depicting the abuse or assault of children, saying such actions could further compromise the privacy and dignity of the minors involved.

He cautioned that circulation of such material involving children could attract serious legal consequences under the Juvenile Justice Act and other applicable laws.

The CWC appealed to the public to act responsibly and protect the privacy and dignity of children by refraining from sharing such content. (Source: NewsFY)
