West Siang is set to host its first-ever Inter-Departmental Sports Tournament from September 18 to 30, bringing together more than 1,000 government employees from 23 departments.

The 12-day tournament will feature men’s football, men’s and women’s volleyball, women’s tug of war and badminton. Badminton events will include men’s and women’s singles and doubles in Open, Sub-Veteran and Veteran categories.

Departments will compete not only for individual titles but also for the overall championship. The overall winner will be decided through a cumulative points system based on performance across the various disciplines.

Organisers said the tournament aims to promote fitness, teamwork and camaraderie while providing government employees a platform to interact beyond their workplaces, strengthen inter-departmental ties and adopt healthier lifestyles.

The initiative was conceptualised by District Weightlifting Association president Bommi Bagra and District Sports Officer Eken Bam.

The tournament is being organised under the chairmanship of West Siang Deputy Commissioner Mindo Loyi, with support from Sports Minister Kento Jini and legislators of the district.

With participation from 23 departments and over 1,000 employees, the inaugural edition is expected to be one of West Siang’s largest sporting gatherings involving government personnel. (DIPR)
