35th Ziro Bird Walk records 15 species, spots rare red-collared dove

ZIRO, OCT 31:

The 35th Autumn Edition of the Ziro Bird Walk brought together nature enthusiasts, local conservationists and birdwatchers at Pigey Aji traditional farmland in Ziro Valley, recording 15 bird species and an unusual sighting of the Red-collared Dove.

Founded and spearheaded by wildlife enthusiast Koj Mama and other conservationists, the walk offered participants an opportunity to explore the valley’s rich avian diversity and observe seasonal migratory birds against the backdrop of the traditional farmland.

The event was organised with support from the Department of Environment and Forests, Arunachal Tourism, the Department of Information and Public Relations (IPR), the Arunachal Pradesh Birding Club (APBC) and local partners.

Among the species recorded were the Northern Lapwing, Pacific Golden Plover, Himalayan Buzzard and Eurasian Sparrowhawk. However, the highlight was the sighting of the Red-collared Dove, a species typically associated with lower-altitude habitats. Birding guides and researchers described its presence at the high-altitude location as an unusual occurrence.

Beyond birdwatching, the initiative continues to promote community participation in conservation and raise awareness about the ecological significance and biodiversity of Ziro Valley.

The organisers reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining the seasonal bird walks and encouraging greater public participation in nature conservation.
