ITANAGAR : Arunachal Pradesh joined the rest of the country in celebrating the International Day of Yoga on Sunday, with Governor Lt Gen KT Parnaik (Retd), Chief Minister Pema Khandu and other dignitaries leading programmes across the state and highlighting yoga’s role in promoting physical, mental and emotional well-being.
The Governor, accompanied by State Health Minister Biyuram Wahge, participated in the state-level programme at Lok Bhavan. The event was organised by Indira Gandhi Technological and Medical Sciences University (IGTAMSU), Ziro, in collaboration with the Department of Youth Affairs.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor described the International Day of Yoga as a global recognition of India’s timeless civilisational wisdom. He said yoga, once rooted in ancient Indian traditions, has evolved into a universal pathway to holistic health and well-being.
Describing yoga as one of India’s greatest gifts to humanity, he noted that in an era marked by stress, anxiety, lifestyle disorders and sedentary habits, yoga offers a simple, cost-effective and sustainable approach to preventive healthcare. Referring to this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, he said yoga helps people of all age groups maintain physical fitness, mental alertness, emotional well-being and independence throughout life.
The Governor also highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s role in securing global recognition for yoga through the adoption of the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations in 2014 with the support of 177 countries. He encouraged people, especially youth and senior citizens, to incorporate yoga into their daily lives.
As part of the programme, the Governor distributed copies of his booklet, Yoga for Common Health Challenges, which provides practical yoga-based solutions for managing common health concerns and lifestyle-related ailments. He expressed hope that the publication would inspire individuals and families to adopt healthier and more balanced lifestyles.
IGTAMSU Vice Chancellor Prof K Satya Lakshmi also spoke on the importance of yoga and the university’s initiatives to promote wellness. Students of the university presented a synchronised yoga demonstration based on the Common Yoga Protocol prescribed by the Ministry of AYUSH. Personnel from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Arunachal Pradesh Police, NCC, Scouts and Guides, and officials from Lok Bhavan and the Health Department participated in the programme.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pema Khandu led the state’s celebrations at Jang in Tawang district, where he joined school children, personnel of the Indian Army, Central Armed Police Forces, Border Roads Organisation, public representatives, officials and local residents in a mass yoga session.
“Incredible energy at Jang as we celebrated International Day of Yoga with school children, the Indian Army, CAPF personnel, BRO, public representatives, officials and citizens. Yoga unites us in strength, discipline and wellness,” Khandu said in a social media post.
The Chief Minister described yoga as India’s timeless gift to humanity, offering a path to physical well-being, mental clarity and inner peace. He said yoga has grown into a global movement under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged people to make it a part of their daily routine for a healthier and more harmonious society.
Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein also participated in a yoga session in Itanagar along with Education Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona and others. In a social media post, Mein said yoga nurtures the body, calms the mind and awakens the soul while promoting balance, resilience and inner peace. He called upon people to embrace the transformative power of yoga and adopt practices that support vitality, well-being and graceful ageing.
The Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly also observed the day with a special yoga session at the Assembly Complex. MLA Hayeng Mangfi, Assembly Secretary Tadar Meena, Joint Secretary K. Jugli, officers and staff of the Assembly participated in the programme.
Pasighat: Arunachal Pradesh University (APU), Pasighat, observed the International Day of Yoga with a yoga session on its campus. Registrar Narmi Darang, faculty members, employees, staff and students participated in the programme held under this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”
The session featured yoga asanas, breathing exercises and meditation under the guidance of instructors. Speaking on the occasion, APU Assistant Registrar (Academics) Likha Rinchin highlighted the importance of yoga in maintaining physical and mental well-being and encouraged the university community to make it a part of their daily routine.
Tawang: The District Administration, Tawang, in collaboration with the 190 Mountain Brigade, celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga at the Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso High Altitude Sports Stadium.
Among those present were Arunachal Pradesh Industries, Textile & Handicrafts, Labour & Employment and IPR Minister Nyato Dukam, Tezu MLA Dr Mohesh Chai, Tawang MLA Namgey Tsering, Tawang Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo, Brigadier Bhupal Singh, Zilla Parishad members, Heads of Departments, students and members of the public.
Addressing the gathering, Dukam described yoga as a way of life that harmonises physical health, mental well-being and spiritual energy. He urged people to adopt yoga as a daily practice for a healthier and more balanced life. Deputy Commissioner Angmo highlighted yoga’s role in promoting healthy living, reducing stress and fostering social harmony. The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from government officials, security personnel, students and citizens.
Yingkiong: The District Ayush Society, Upper Siang, celebrated the International Day of Yoga at the Multipurpose Hall, Yingkiong, under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”
Upper Siang MLA Alo Libang, government officials, public leaders, teachers, students and members of the public participated in the programme. Addressing the gathering, Libang emphasised the importance of incorporating yoga into daily life to promote physical, mental and spiritual well-being. He said this year’s theme underscored the significance of healthy ageing and maintaining an active lifestyle.
District Reproductive and Child Health Officer Dr Andeng Sitek highlighted the significance of the International Day of Yoga, while the yoga session was conducted by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Awasiya Vidyalaya Headmistress Obul Boli, who guided participants through various yoga asanas and meditation exercises.
Aalo: The 12th International Day of Yoga was observed at Gumin Kinn, Aalo, with enthusiastic participation from government officials, students and members of the public.
The programme was organised by the District AYUSH Society in collaboration with the district administration, MY Bharat and Art of Living, West Siang.
In his address, Sports & Youth Affairs, Parliamentary Affairs and SJETA Minister Kento Jini stressed the importance of practising yoga regularly, describing it as a means to achieve peace, mental stability and overall well-being.
West Siang Deputy Commissioner Mindo Loyi encouraged people to adopt yoga as a daily habit, stating that it helps keep the mind and body healthy, active and focused. The yoga session was conducted by Reena Doji, Kompu Loya Ete, Kirjum Basar Sora and Yukbin Diyum.
Silluk: The International Day of Yoga was celebrated at Silluk village under Mebo subdivision in East Siang district under the theme “Prana Silluk 2026 – Breathe Pure, Nourish the Soul, Experience Silluk.”
The programme, initiated by Arunachal Pradesh Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Cooperation and Transport Minister Ojing Tasing and organised by the Panchayati Raj Department in collaboration with the district administration, witnessed participation from villagers, students, officials and community leaders.
Among those present were Pasighat East MLA Tapi Darang, East Siang Zilla Parishad Chairperson Ruth Tabing Boko and East Siang Superintendent of Police Pankaj Lamba.
Addressing mediapersons, Tasing said the celebration formed part of the global observance of Yoga Day and highlighted yoga’s role in promoting wellness and a stress-free lifestyle. Speakers emphasised the importance of incorporating yoga into daily life for physical fitness, mental well-being and harmonious living. The yoga session was conducted by Episa Preme.
Daporijo: The 12th International Day of Yoga was observed at Singik Hall, Daporijo, under the theme “Yoga Mahotsav 2026 – Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”
The programme witnessed participation from government officials, Panchayati Raj Institution members, students, NGOs, religious leaders and members of the public.
Among those present were Daporijo MLA Taniya Soki, Nacho MLA Nakap Nalo and Upper Subansiri Deputy Commissioner Tasso Gambo.
A mass yoga session focusing on physical fitness, mental well-being and healthy living was conducted by Art of Living instructor Miju Nayam, who guided participants through yoga postures, breathing exercises and meditation techniques.
Organised by the District Health Society, Upper Subansiri, the programme concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to adopting yoga as a regular practice for a healthier and more balanced life.
Khonsa: The Khonsa Battalion of Assam Rifles observed the International Day of Yoga with enthusiastic participation from officers, Junior Commissioned Officers and troops at its headquarters.
The programme featured yoga asanas, pranayama and meditation sessions conducted by trained instructors. Organisers highlighted yoga’s role in maintaining physical fitness, reducing stress, strengthening mental resilience and promoting overall well-being.
An awareness session on the long-term health benefits of regular yoga practice was also conducted. The battalion reaffirmed its commitment to promoting physical fitness and mental wellness among its personnel.
Tuting: The Spearhead Division under Spear Corps of the Indian Army organised a mass yoga session at Tuting in the Siang Valley, bringing together soldiers, veterans, civil administration officials, schoolchildren and local residents.
Held against the backdrop of the Eastern Himalayas, the programme promoted physical fitness, mental resilience and holistic well-being.
The event highlighted yoga’s role in fostering harmony, balance and social cohesion while strengthening civil-military ties and community participation in the frontier region.
Bomdila: The District Administration, West Kameng, in collaboration with the District Ayush Society, celebrated International Day of Yoga at the Government Higher Secondary School auditorium in Bomdila.
Among those present were West Kameng Deputy Commissioner Dilip Kumar, West Kameng Superintendent of Police D.W. Thongon and Commanding Officer of 2nd Battalion Arunachal Scouts Col Parikshit Das.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner emphasised the importance of yoga in promoting physical, mental and emotional well-being and encouraged people to adopt it as a daily practice.
The programme also featured an awareness campaign on Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, focusing on the harmful effects of substance abuse and the need for a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
Namsai: The 12th International Day of Yoga was observed at Hochayan Poi-Pee-Mau Ground in Namsai under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”
Among those present were Namsai Deputy Commissioner C.R. Khampa, Namsai Zilla Parishad Chairperson Chow Sujana Namchoom, Namsai Superintendent of Police S. Thinley, CRPF Commandant D.K. Singh and Assam Rifles Subedar Mitu Ram. Personnel from security forces, government departments, schools and Brahma Kumaris participated in the programme.
Speakers highlighted the role of yoga in promoting physical and mental well-being and encouraged participants to adopt it as a regular practice. Yoga instructor Sunita Sonar conducted a demonstration session, while Rajyoga trainer B.K. Rakesh delivered a presentation on the values and benefits of yoga and meditation. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by the District Sports Officer.
Likabali: The 12th International Day of Yoga was celebrated at Likabali under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” with participation from government officials, public representatives and community members.
Among those present were Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Kardo Nyigyor, Lower Siang Additional Deputy Commissioner Mokar Riba and Lower Siang Superintendent of Police Bomken Basar.
Organised by the District Ayush Society in collaboration with the district administration at the Government Higher Secondary School auditorium, the programme highlighted the importance of yoga in promoting physical, mental and spiritual well-being. The yoga session was conducted by Binyak Chisi.
Itanagar: Dera Natung Government College (DNGC), Itanagar, observed the International Day of Yoga at its auditorium under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”
Organised by the college’s Yoga and Wellness Centre in collaboration with Seva Bharati, the programme witnessed participation from faculty members, NCC volunteers, students and members of the organisation. DNGC Principal Dr M.Q. Khan emphasised the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle through yoga.
The session featured yoga postures, breathing exercises and meditation practices aimed at enhancing physical and mental well-being. The programme was coordinated by Dr Tage Ampa, Dr Bige Yomgam and Dr Gepi Jini.
Pessing: The Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Field Office Aalo, organised a Special Outreach Programme on the occasion of the International Day of Yoga at Siyom Valley School, Pessing, in West Siang district.
Siyom Valley School Principal Robin Peter attended the programme as chief guest, while Art of Living yoga instructor Kegam Basar Ado served as the resource person.
Addressing participants, Ado highlighted the importance of yoga in promoting physical fitness, mental well-being and spiritual growth, and encouraged regular practice. CBC Field Office Aalo Head M. Basar elaborated on the significance of this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” and its role in fostering lifelong health and well-being.
The programme featured yoga demonstrations, a theme-based quiz competition and prize distribution, and witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, teachers and local residents.
Rono Hills: Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga under the banner “Yoga Sangam” at its Old Auditorium, with more than 300 participants joining the Common Yoga Protocol session.
The programme was attended by Rajiv Gandhi University Vice-Chancellor (i/c) Prof. S.K. Nayak and Registrar Dr N.T. Rikam, along with faculty members, administrative officers, research scholars, students, alumni and members of the university community.
Personnel of the 31st Battalion Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Yupia, and students of Government Secondary School, RGU Campus, also participated.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Nayak stressed the importance of incorporating yoga into daily life and urged the younger generation to adopt healthy habits and stay away from substance abuse.
Registrar Dr Rikam highlighted yoga’s role in promoting physical fitness, mental well-being and healthy ageing. The yoga session was conducted by Rikpu Kamcham and students of the university’s Yoga Diploma Programme.
Mekailiang: The Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Field Office Tezu, organised a Special Outreach Programme on the International Day of Yoga at Mekailiang village in Lohit district under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”
Mekailiang Gram Panchayat Member Banusai Tarainyu attended the programme as chief guest, while Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya Principal Soumen Roy Chowdhury was the guest of honour. Speakers highlighted the importance of yoga in maintaining physical and mental well-being and encouraged its regular practice.
A mass yoga demonstration was conducted under the guidance of yoga instructors Utatm Kumar Patel, Majem Takaliang and Upendra Pandey.
The programme also featured a quiz competition on yoga, with prizes distributed to winners. CBC Field Office Tezu Head Parvesh Kumar outlined the objectives of the outreach programme.
Yupia: The International Day of Yoga was observed at Golden Jubilee Stadium, Yupia, with participation from government officials, students and security personnel.
Among those present were Papum Pare Deputy Commissioner Lobsang Tsering, District Medical Officer Dr Reena Ronya and District Reproductive and Child Health Officer Dr Tomar Kamki. Students of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Awasiya Vidyalaya and PM Shri Upper Primary School, Yupia, ITBP personnel and staff of the Deputy Commissioner’s and District Medical Officer’s offices also participated.
The yoga session was conducted by Toko Nonia and a team of physiotherapists, who guided participants through various yoga exercises and breathing techniques. On the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner administered the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan pledge, reaffirming the commitment to a healthy, disciplined and drug-free society.
Pasighat: H-Spring Foundation, in collaboration with the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), East Siang, celebrated International Day of Yoga at H-Spring Integrated School, Diking.
The programme focused on promoting physical and mental well-being through yoga and witnessed participation from students, parents, teachers, interns and DLSA representatives. Retired Medical Superintendent Dr Y. Darang spoke on the health benefits of regular yoga practice, while Mirku village Head Gaon Burah O. Dupak appreciated the foundation’s work for children with special needs.
Yoga instructor Pema Lama of Sri Sri Vidya Mandir, Pasighat, conducted yoga, pranayama, Surya Namaskar and meditation sessions. Advocate Sunny Tayeng also spoke on the Legal Services Unit for Children (LSUC) scheme and highlighted child rights and legal aid services.
Itanagar: The Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Regional Office Itanagar, organised a Special Outreach Programme on the International Day of Yoga at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) National Centre of Excellence, Itanagar.
The programme witnessed participation from athletes, coaches, officials and students, and featured the felicitation of international medal-winning athletes of the SAI centre. Addressing the gathering, Power Department Superintending Engineer Joram Lali emphasised the importance of physical fitness, discipline and mental strength.
SAI Itanagar In-charge Sangeeta Rani highlighted yoga’s role in promoting physical, mental and emotional well-being, while resource person Kapil Sharma elaborated on the health benefits of regular yoga practice.
The programme also included a yoga competition and concluded with the felicitation of outstanding athletes.
