DC Namgyal Angmo appreciated the initiative and described it as an inspiring example of officers pursuing creative and literary interests alongside their official responsibilities. She said such books could help preserve memories, traditions and experiences of earlier generations and reconnect young readers with their cultural roots. She also noted the growing dependence on digital screens and declining engagement with books, expressing hope that publications such as Fireside Tales would encourage children and young people to rediscover reading. Tawang District Veterinary Officer Dr Avang Tamin congratulated the author and expressed hope that the stories would reach successive generations and help keep the region’s cultural roots and storytelling tradition alive. SC acknowledges Arunachal govt’s response on CBI probe into contracts

NEW DELHI, AUG 24: The Supreme Court on Monday took note of the response filed by the Arunachal Pradesh government in connection with a CBI status report on allegations relating to contracts allegedly awarded to firms connected with close relatives of Chief Minister Pema Khandu. The matter came up before a Bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta, pursuant to the Court’s August 3, 2026 order, which had raised concerns over alleged non-cooperation by the state government in providing documents to the CBI and had directed the personal appearance of the Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary (Home) at today’s hearing. Appearing for the state government, a team of senior advocates led by Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta and Advocate General of Arunachal Pradesh Indranil Choudhury submitted that the State had complied with the Supreme Court’s directions in letter and spirit and had extended full cooperation to the CBI by providing all information sought by the investigating agency. The Bench noted that the State had apparently supplied the CBI with documents relating to all contracts, rather than restricting the material to contracts allegedly awarded to firms connected with the Chief Minister’s family. The Court observed that providing such a large volume of documents could make the exercise more difficult and potentially delay the investigation. The Court also took note of the affidavits filed by the Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary (Home) explaining the show-cause notices issued pursuant to the August 3 order. It clarified that the personal appearance of the two senior officers would not be required in future unless specifically directed by the Court. During the hearing, petitioner’s counsel Prashant Bhushan sought that scrutiny of documents be confined to firms allegedly connected with the Chief Minister’s family rather than covering contracts across the State. The Court remarked that the petitioners had created the problem and that the State had supplied more documents than were required. The Bench also considered WPC No. 995/2026, Nabam Kakum versus State of Arunachal Pradesh, which raises similar allegations and has been tagged with the main matter, MA 2216/2026 in WP(C) No. 543/2024. The Court directed notices to all concerned and gave the State the option to file its reply, if required. The Supreme Court directed the CBI to file a fresh status report within two weeks and ordered that the matter be listed after four weeks. The formal order of the Court is awaited.

19 children recovered, three held in Namsai trafficking probe

NAMSAI, AUG 24: Namsai Police have recovered 19 children from different locations across Arunachal Pradesh and arrested three alleged facilitators in an ongoing investigation into a suspected child trafficking and exploitation network. The children were recovered from Mechuka, Aalo, Pasighat, Naharlagun, Itanagar and Longding. The case was registered at Namsai Police Station on August 17 following a complaint received from the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Namsai. Considering the inter-district nature and seriousness of the case, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted under the supervision of Namsai Superintendent of Police Sangey Thinley APPS, assisted by DySP (HQ) Martin Ratan. Namsai SDPO DySP Kengo Dirchi is the Investigating Officer. The SIT includes Namsai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Inspector T Gadi, SI R. Kahik and other police personnel. Police have arrested Gumnya Kochung, Marta Ete and Neha Gerory for their alleged roles as facilitators or brokers. Preliminary investigation indicates that economically vulnerable families were allegedly approached with assurances of better education, care and upbringing for their children. The children were subsequently allegedly procured, transported and placed with different persons at distant locations. In some cases, suspected monetary transactions ranging from approximately Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000 per child have emerged. Police are also examining alleged instances in which parents or guardians received money in connection with handing over their children. Some of the recovered children were allegedly engaged as domestic helpers and in hotel-related work. Police said a majority of the children are reportedly below eight years of age, with the youngest reportedly around three years old at the time of procurement or placement. During preliminary interaction, some children were unable to recall even their parents’ names or basic family details. Following their recovery, the children underwent necessary medical examinations and child-protection procedures before being produced before the competent CWC. Their statements are also being recorded before the Magistrate in accordance with law through a child-friendly and sensitive process. Police said the identities, photographs and other particulars that could reveal the children’s identities are being strictly protected as required under law. The SIT is examining financial transactions, call records, digital evidence and the movement of the children to establish the complete chain and determine the individual roles of alleged facilitators, recipients and others involved. The recovery of 19 children is not the conclusion of the operation, police said, adding that teams are continuing efforts to trace and recover more children and identify other persons linked to the suspected network. Namsai Police have appealed to anyone having information about children who may have been taken, procured, transported or placed with others under similar circumstances to approach the nearest police station or CWC. Parents and guardians who may have handed over their children through intermediaries or facilitators have also been urged to come forward and share information. Police said all credible inputs would be verified promptly, with the safety, dignity, privacy and best interests of the children remaining the foremost priority.
