ITANAGAR : The opposition Congress and the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) on Saturday welcomed the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET examination controversy, stating that it was only the “first step” towards addressing the concerns of affected students.
State Congress president Bosiram Siram described Pradhan’s resignation as a “significant victory” for the country’s youth, saying it was the outcome of peaceful democratic protests.
“The resignation alone cannot restore the lost academic years, opportunities and peace of mind of thousands of affected students, nor can it restore public confidence in the examination system,” Siram said.
The Congress leader demanded disciplinary action against Delhi Police personnel allegedly involved in baton-charging peaceful student protesters, and sought the unconditional withdrawal of all FIRs lodged against the demonstrators.
He also called for a time-bound independent probe into the alleged paper leak, comprehensive restructuring of the National Testing Agency (NTA), and the creation of an independent mechanism to prevent similar irregularities in future.
The state Congress also demanded permanent NEET and CUET examination centres in Arunachal Pradesh and a predictable annual examination calendar for students from the Northeast.
The party directed all its district units to organise “Victory Marches” to acknowledge the efforts of students.
The PPA said those holding high public office must uphold moral accountability.
PPA president Nabam Vivek, who represents the Doimukh assembly constituency, said the alleged NEET paper leak had seriously affected the lives and future of thousands of students across the country.
“The Union minister should have taken moral responsibility on day one, as people in high positions ought to demonstrate high moral standards,” he.
He also lauded the student-led protests and civil society demonstrations, saying they reflected the strength of democratic values.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pema Khandu said Pradhan’s tenure reflected his commitment to the country’s youth and noted that his background in student activism had given him a deep understanding of the aspirations and challenges of young Indians.
“Leading the education sector is a demanding task that requires balancing complex expectations while keeping the long-term interests of students, parents and teachers at the centre,” Khandu said.
He said Pradhan had worked with dedication to strengthen educational institutions and advance structural reforms aimed at preparing the education system for the future. (Source: PTI)
