TAWANG, SEP 7:

The mortal remains of former Tawang Deputy Commissioner Sang Phuntsok were cremated with full Buddhist rites at his native Lebrang village in Tawang district on Sunday.

Monks led prayers and traditional religious ceremonies during the funeral, attended by family members, relatives, former colleagues, government officials, well-wishers and local residents who gathered to pay their final respects.

Mourners remembered Sang Phuntsok for his humility, dedication and close association with the people of Tawang during his tenure as Deputy Commissioner. The funeral rites reflected the region’s deep Buddhist traditions, with prayers and religious chants marking his final farewell.

Sang Phuntsok passed away in Delhi on September 1, prompting condolences from political leaders, civil servants, social organisations and people across Arunachal Pradesh.

An AGMUT-cadre officer, Sang Phuntsok served as Tawang Deputy Commissioner from July 2016 to December 2021. During his tenure, he was involved in strengthening administration and development initiatives in the frontier district.

After retiring from the Indian Administrative Service in 2022, he continued serving the state as a Member of the Arunachal Pradesh Lokayukta.

His death was widely mourned in Tawang, with markets and business establishments remaining closed in the days following his demise as residents paid tribute to the former administrator.
