SHILLONG, SEP 11:

The BJP’s prospects of expanding its footprint in Meghalaya received a boost on Friday, with UDP MLA Olan Sing Suin saying eight party legislators were in talks with the saffron party, while senior leader AL Hek met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi.

Hek said he discussed the political situation in the state and the road ahead with Shah, including the FCRA Bill, which has been referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee.

Hek said Shah informed him that he had already met at least 35 Christian forums and leaders on the issue and would invite the stakeholders to Delhi for further discussions after the JPC process is completed.

Hek said he also shared his assessment of the emerging political scenario in Meghalaya and sought Shah’s guidance as the BJP works to strengthen its organisation across the state.

He said the party sees a clear opportunity to emerge as a “strong, credible and independent political force” in Meghalaya and is working towards forming its own government in the state.

“Our goal is not merely to be a participant in Meghalaya’s politics, but to provide strong, stable and accountable leadership through a government of our own,” Hek said.

His remarks came hours after Suin said eight UDP MLAs were negotiating with the BJP over a set of demands, including inclusion of Khasi in the Eighth Schedule, changes to coal-mining regulations, relocation of the Harijan Colony from Them Iew Mawlong and issues relating to the FCRA and MRSSA.

Suin said the eight-member group could join the BJP “anytime” if the Centre agreed to their demands, while ruling out negotiations for ministerial berths. (Source: PTI)
