ZIRO, SEP 17:

A voluntary blood donation camp organised on Wednesday by the NSS Unit of Indira Gandhi Technological and Medical Sciences University (IGTAMSU), Ziro, in collaboration with the Blood Centre of Gyati Takka Zonal General Hospital (GTZGH), added 28 units of blood to the hospital’s emergency reserve.

The camp was organised as part of the annual Nationwide Mega Voluntary Blood Donation initiative of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

Led by Dr Tongbram Bidyananda Singh, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Pathology and Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), the camp witnessed 69 community members coming forward for donation, including 27 men and 42 women.

Following screening and counselling, 28 donors successfully donated blood—16 men and 12 women. The collected units comprised 13 O-positive, six A-positive, five B-positive and four AB-positive units. The blood will support emergency care and patient treatment across Lower Subansiri district.

The screening process also resulted in 39 prospective donors being temporarily deferred, including 10 men and 29 women. Low blood pressure and anaemia were among the common reasons, while other cases involved recent infections, ongoing antibiotic treatment, underweight status, hypertension, hypothyroidism and recent vaccination.

Medical staff highlighted the importance of adequate hydration, balanced nutrition and sufficient rest in helping prospective donors prepare for future donation drives.

The GTZGH Blood Centre team thanked IGTAMSU, its NSS volunteers and all donors for their participation. Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to organising similar blood donation drives in the future.
