Assamese flick ‘Aakuti’ to have world premiere at New York Indian Film Festival

GUWAHATI : ‘Aakuti’ (Longing), an Assamese feature film on the emotional journey of an eight-year-old girl haunted by her mother’s loss, has been chosen at the New York Indian Film Festival, where the movie will have its ‘World Premiere’, the filmmaker said on Sunday. The film marks the directorial debut feature of Snigdha P Roy, and it was also selected for ‘Film Bazaar Recommends’ section at Waves Film Bazaar 2025. Written, directed and edited by Roy, ‘Aakuti’ is part of the official selection of the New York Indian Film Festival 2026 (NYIFF), and it will be screened on May 30. Commenting on the development, Roy said, “Being selected by the New York Indian Film Festival and nominated alongside some remarkable films is an honour for all of us. It feels like a meaningful acknowledgement of the passion and resilience that went into making the film possible.” ‘Aakuti’ was not an easy film to make, and filmed on a modest budget, it was brought to life by a small team bound by conviction rather than resources, she added. The director co-produced the film with Tanuja P Roy under the banner of PKR Films. The film’s cinematography was done by Chida Bora, sound design by Debajit Gayan and background score by Ashutosh Sohoni. Reflecting on the experience and journey of making ‘Aakuti’, producer Tanuja said, “It is the debut feature from PKR Films, and its journey from inception to the international stage at the NYIFF is a significant milestone for our team.” The film is built on a foundation of minimalistic storytelling and raw human connection, she added. The title role of the film, the child’s character, has been portrayed by Kavisha Mahanta. The film also features Nilim Chetia, Anisha Hazarika, Arun Hazarikа and Ananya Hazarika in lead roles. The 1-hour 34-minute film revolves around Lakhi, who lost her mother when she was infant and now constantly longs for her. To cope with the void, Lakhi fills pages with drawings, trying to imagine her mother’s face, but is left frustrated and heartbroken. Her father, Bishnu, loves her deeply, but Lakhi remains withdrawn, caught in a web of inner turmoil and self-doubt. He tries his best to understand her, to offer comfort, but finds himself falling short. Bishnu leans on a close friendship with a woman, who guides him through his difficulties. They also hope for a life together, but are unable to because of the complexities of their situation. And Lakhi remains unaware of this relationship. ‘Aakuti’ traces the emotional journey of a child and the quiet, and the tender bond between a father and daughter as they try to sail through life. Panel probing Manipur violence gets 6-month extension to submit report

NEW DELHI : The Centre has given another six-month extension, till November 20, to a Commission of Inquiry to submit its report on the probe into the 2023 Manipur violence that claimed more than 260 lives, a government notification said. The three-member panel, now headed by former Supreme Court judge Balbir Singh Chauhan, was formed on June 4, 2023, in the aftermath of the ethnic violence that broke out in the northeastern state in May that year. It was initially headed by former Gauhati High Court chief justice Ajai Lamba, who resigned with effect from February 28. Justice Chauhan took charge on March 1. According to the notification published in the gazette on Thursday, the commission shall submit its report to the Centre “as soon as possible but not later than the 20th November, 2026”. The panel is probing the sequence of events and facts relating to the ethnic violence that broke out in the state on May 3, 2023, after a “Tribal Solidarity March” was organised in the hill districts. The protest was held against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The ensuing violence claimed more than 260 lives. The violence was preceded by earlier tensions over the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserve forest land, leading to a series of smaller agitations. The Centre constituted the commission on the recommendation of the Manipur government, citing the necessity of an inquiry into a matter of public importance. The scope of the inquiry includes ascertaining whether there were any lapses or dereliction of duty on the part of any of the authorities or individuals responsible. The commission is also assessing the adequacy of the administrative measures taken to prevent and deal with the violence and riots. It is looking into the complaints or allegations submitted by any individual or association. It has been given extensions a number of times to submit its report since then — on September 13, 2024, December 3, 2024, May 20, 2025, and December 16, 2025 — making the latest order a fifth one. In its last extension, the Union home ministry had given the commission time till May 20 to submit its report. According to the June 4, 2023, notification of the home ministry, large-scale violence broke out in Manipur on May 3, 2023, claiming the lives of many residents of the state, besides injuring several others. People’s houses and properties were burnt down as a result of the arson, rendering many of them homeless, the notification had said. (Source: PTI)

UCC to ensure justice for every citizen: Assam CM

GUWAHATI : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will ensure equal application of law for all citizens, with special emphasis on the rights of women and children. He asserted that tribal communities will be kept out of the purview of the UCC to protect their traditions and customs. “The Uniform Civil Code in Assam will ensure equal application of the rule of law for everyone and guarantee fair rights to all, especially women and children,” Sarma said in a post on X. “The Janjatiya Samaj of Assam will not be under the purview of #UCCAssam to protect their customs and traditions,” he added, referring to the tribal communities. The first cabinet meeting of the new government on Wednesday had approved the implementation of the UCC in the state, with tribals to be kept outside its purview, Sarma had said after the decision. Sharing two slides on social media on the proposed UCC’s objectives, the CM said it is about “one state, one law”, which will ensure a single legal system for marriage, divorce and succession. Legal marriageable age will be fixed at 18 years for women and 21 years for men, with mandatory reporting of all marriages and live-in relationships within 60 days. “ST and Adivasi communities fully exempted to preserve customs,” Sarma added. Maintaining that the UCC is to ensure “justice for every citizen”, Sarma said it will entail that spouses, children and parents share equal inheritance. The UCC will have explicit maintenance rights for women in marriages and live-in relationships, and guaranteed legitimacy for all children and mother-focussed custody for kids under the age of five years. There will be provision for strict penalties for false statements to ensure legal records integrity, Sarma added. The draft of the UCC Bill will be laid in the Assembly on May 26, Sarma said on Wednesday. The UCC will primarily cover the four subjects — minimum age of marriage, prohibition of polygamy, equal rights for daughters in parents’ property and matters relating to live-in relationships. It will also deal with succession, marriage, live-in relationships and compulsory registration of marriage and divorce, he
