Over 560 held in latest crackdown against child marriage in Assam: CM

GUWAHATI, OCT 29:

More than 560 people have been arrested in the latest crackdown against child marriage across Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday.

He asserted that the operation against child marriage would continue until the social menace is completely eradicated from the state.

“Child marriage offenders can keep saying NOOO, but the crackdown will NOT stop! As of now, 565 arrested and 481 cases registered. The crackdown continues until child marriage is eradicated from Assam,” Sarma said in a social media post.

The CM had earlier said the state government’s efforts in the past few years led to over 12,000 cases being registered, more than 11,000 arrests, and an 81-per cent drop in child marriages across 20 districts.

Sarma had also announced that Assam would be completely free from the menace by 2026. (Source: PTI)
