Manipur: Nagas stage protests demanding release of six abducted men

IMPHAL : Thousands of women on Wednesday staged multiple sit-in protests across Naga-inhabited areas of Manipur demanding the immediate release of six men held hostage by suspected Kuki militants. In the Senapati district headquarters, normal life was affected as markets remained closed and commercial transport was off the roads in view of the protests. Demonstrators raised slogans demanding justice and held placards that read “Hostages must be released; Kuki militants, stop kidnapping”. Naga Women’s Union president Priscilla Thiumai told reporters, “We want to send a clear message to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that his government must give justice and bring back the hostages at the earliest without any harm.” “The culprits should be arrested and brought to book immediately. Such acts by Kuki militants, who are observing the Suspension of Operations pact with the Centre, have become a norm. This is not acceptable. We appeal to the Centre to abrogate the SoO pact with the Kuki militants,” she said. Hundreds of women also staged similar protests in Ukhrul, Chandel, Tamenglong and Noney to express solidarity with the families of the missing persons and urge the government to ensure their safe return. More than 38 people were abducted and held hostage by armed groups in Kangpokpi and Senapati districts on May 13, hours after three church leaders were killed in an ambush in Kangpokpi district. Of them, 31 people have been released, including 12 Naga women from Konsakhul village and 16 Kukis from Kangpokpi district. Two Salesian brothers were also released. Six Naga men, however, continued to be held hostage and their whereabouts are not yet known. Kuki Inpi Manipur, the apex body of the Kuki tribes in the state, also claimed that 14 people from the community continued to be held hostage by Naga groups. (Source: PTI)

Politicising Zubeen Garg’s death backfired on Cong-led oppn in Assam polls: Himanta

GUWAHATI : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday claimed the Congress-led opposition paid the price for “politicising” musician Zubeen Garg’s death in the Assembly polls as they were rejected by the people. He visited Garg’s cremation ground, ‘Zubeen Khetra’ at Kamarakuchi in Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati to pay tribute to the musician who died in Singapore on September 19 last year while swimming in the sea. The 52-year-old singer had gone to the Southeast Asian nation to perform in the 4th edition of the festival. Sarma stressed that there should be no politics in the name of Zubeen Garg. “As promised, after the dust of the elections settled, I visited the site today purely as a tribute to someone who, for us, is evergreen. He was never a matter of politics, but an emotion that lives in every heart,” the chief minister said. He also claimed that politicising the unfortunate death of Garg backfired on the Congress-led opposition during the recently concluded Assembly elections. “Some of them have stopped invoking his name as soon as polls got over, and those who came to his shrine had no knowledge of Zubeen when he was alive,” the CM said. “Zubeen was, is and will always remain my favourite! Today, at Zubeen Khetra, I paid my tributes to Assam’s eternal heartthrob and reviewed the progress of the development work underway, an effort that will stand as a fitting tribute to his enduring legacy,” Sarma told reporters. The Congress and its allies had criticised the Assam government during election campaigns over the alleged delay in setting up the fast-track court in the Zubeen Garg death case. Giving justice to Zubeen Garg within 100 days of government formation was a “guarantee” by the Congress, which criticised the BJP as no national party leader visited Zubeen Khetra. During his visit on Wednesday, Sarma reviewed the ongoing development works at the Zubeen Khetra. He said the initial phase of construction has begun, while steps have also been taken to safeguard the site from possible landslides. Once the construction of the boundary wall is completed, the main development work of the Samadhi Khetra is expected to progress in a structured manner, the chief minister added. (Source: PTI)       AASU to protest against price rise of essential items Guwahati, May 20 (PTI) All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) president Utpal Sarma on Wednesday said it will launch a state-wide protest against price rise from May 22 onwards.   In a Facebook post, Sarma said the price rise of essential commodities has affected people hard across the state.   “The market is on fire, and the people are severely suffering. Both governments at the Centre and state have failed to reduce prices,” he added.   In such a situation, a people’s movement is inevitable, Sarma asserted.   “On May 22, AASU will start a protest march against price rise and to demand a reduction in the rates of essential items,” he added.   AASU has not shared details of the proposed protest as of now. PM Modi’s five-nation outreach

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a whirlwind tour of five nations. He is visiting the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy. These are difficult times for the world, as supply lines are disrupted and energy uncertainties are playing havoc with the planning of emerging economies. This is not just a regular seasonal disruption, but the cumulative effect of the world economy undergoing a seismic change. Powerful nations such as the USA, China and Russia are busy establishing their respective hegemonies and working overtime to ensure that their national interests are best served. However, this has unleashed uncertainty, as no one knows for sure what comes next — Trump tariffs, the Ukraine war, or Chinese aggression in the South China Sea. In this scenario, a country like ours has to chart its own course. Modi’s international doctrine seems to stem from the erstwhile principles of non-alignment and neutrality, while staying out of power politics and, at the same time, connecting with countries that can not only provide what India needs but also offer markets for Indian goods and services. Prime Minister Modi has taken up the cudgels to spearhead the national campaign for self-sufficiency beyond borders. India is seeking investments, technology partnerships and greater strategic influence as it attempts to transform itself into a global manufacturing and innovation hub. Modi’s five-nation tour, is an exercise in diversifying imports and opening up to new avenues. The approach has found a ready partner in the Netherlands, where India and the Dutch government elevated bilateral ties to the level of a strategic partnership. The talks between Modi and Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten paved the way for cooperation and synergy on various issues. This move reflects the growing importance of the relationship beyond traditional trade. The partnership now extends into semiconductors, maritime security, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, defence cooperation and resilient supply chains. India’s efforts to build a domestic semiconductor ecosystem cannot succeed without partnerships of this nature. Modi’s pitch to Dutch companies to “design, innovate and manufacture in India” aligns directly with New Delhi’s broader ambition to reduce dependence on imports and integrate India into trusted global technology chains. The Scandinavian leg of the tour — particularly Sweden — was equally strategic. Nordic countries are global leaders in green technologies, sustainable urban planning, innovation ecosystems and clean energy transitions. India’s engagement with them is rooted in its need for advanced technological collaboration in areas such as hydrogen energy, climate resilience, smart manufacturing and digital governance. Sweden’s strong innovation-driven economy and Norway’s expertise in energy and maritime sectors make them natural partners for India’s developmental priorities. As India expands economic relations with European nations, it is also subtly balancing geopolitical equations by building diversified partnerships across the continent, reducing its dependence on the US and China. Why has Arunachal CM not been removed even after SC ordered CBI probe against him: Cong

NEW DELHI : The Congress on Tuesday questioned why Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has not been removed even after the Supreme Court directed the CBI to begin a probe into charges of corruption against him. In a post on X, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said this amounts to “gross travesty” of the Supreme Court order itself. Ramesh said it was on April 6, 2026, that a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court directed the CBI to commence a preliminary inquiry into allegations that the Arunachal Pradesh chief minister’s family was awarded contracts worth Rs 1,270 crore over 10 years from January 2015 to December 2025 in a direct conflict of interest. “This is not an order of a lower court or a High Court. It is of the Supreme Court. Yet the CM continues in office. He is also the PWD Minister and controls the files that the CBI will need to conduct its inquiry. “Why is the man who once said ‘na khaoonga, na khaane doonga’ quiet and why has the Arunachal Pradesh CM not been asked to step down? This is a gross travesty of the Supreme Court’s verdict itself,” he said in his post. “There are other BJP CMs as well who fall in the category of the Arunachal Pradesh CM,” Ramesh added. The Supreme Court on April 6 directed the CBI to register within two weeks a preliminary inquiry into allegations of preferential allotment of contracts for public work in Arunachal Pradesh to firms allegedly owned or related to the family members of Chief Minister Khandu. Observing that the State and its instrumentalities cannot confer benefits according to the “whims of any political or administrative functionary”, the apex court said it was a fit case where an “independent investigation” was necessary. The bench headed by Justice Vikram Nath said where a case concerns the integrity of public procurement and involves allegations of conflict of interest at the highest levels, an investigation must not only be fair but also must appear fair. Guv stresses need for greater augmentation of MSMEs in Arunachal

NEW DELHI : Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen K T Parnaik (Retd) on Tuesday stressed the need for greater augmentation of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), saying the sector can emerge as a strong pillar of the state’s socio-economic development. During an interaction with Santanu Srivastava, Managing Director and CEO of Ishan International in New Delhi, the governor highlighted the immense potential of Arunachal Pradesh for entrepreneurship and local enterprise development owing to its rich natural resources, tribal crafts, organic farming potential, forest produce, tourism opportunities and unique cultural heritage. Parnaik said MSMEs can create sustainable livelihood opportunities for youths, women, artisans, farmers and self-help groups across the state, an official statement said here. He observed that sectors such as food processing, bamboo and cane products, handloom and handicrafts, eco-tourism, horticulture, herbal products, organic agriculture and small-scale manufacturing hold tremendous promise for Arunachal Pradesh. Parnaik added that MSMEs can strengthen self-reliance, reduce unemployment and discourage migration of youths to cities in search of jobs. He said that the sector also helps local entrepreneurs gain confidence and financial independence while preserving traditional skills and indigenous knowledge. Emphasising the importance of institutional support, the governor said better infrastructure, financial assistance, skill development, market connectivity and digital access are essential for MSMEs to drive inclusive growth, strengthen the rural economy and contribute towards the vision of Atmanirbhar Arunachal and Viksit Bharat. APTUC seeks implementation of labour laws, social security measures

Staff Reporter ITANAGAR : The Arunachal Pradesh Trade Union Council (APTUC) has urged the state government to take immediate measures for the welfare, protection and social security of workers across the state. Addressing reporters at the Arunachal Press Club on Tuesday, APTUC president Jalley Sonam said the union had submitted a memorandum to the Labour Commissioner on May 4 highlighting several long-pending demands concerning organised and unorganised workers in Arunachal Pradesh. Among the key demands, the union sought establishment of the Dattopant Thengdi National Board for Workers Education and Development in the state to promote workers’ education, awareness and skill development in rural and urban areas. Sonam said the initiative would help workers better understand their rights and improve livelihoods under the provisions of the Code on Social Security, 2020. The union also demanded immediate implementation of the Shop and Establishment Act and Rules, which were reportedly tabled in the state Assembly in 2016. According to Sonam, implementation of the Act would ensure benefits such as provident fund, Employees’ State Insurance (ESI), gratuity, bonus, compensation and minimum wages for workers employed in shops and commercial establishments. Alleging that delay in implementation had adversely affected workers, he said many employees continue to face long working hours, denial of weekly offs, non-payment of minimum wages and lack of social security benefits. The APTUC further sought constitution of a Minimum Wages Advisory Board under the Code on Wages, 2019, for revision and regulation of minimum wages in both organised and unorganised sectors. The union also demanded formation of the Arunachal Pradesh Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Advisory Board under the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020, to monitor workplace safety standards and workers’ welfare. Expressing concern over the condition of unorganised workers, Sonam said the council had proposed creation of the Arunachal Pradesh Unorganised Workers’ Social Security Board under the Code on Social Security, 2020, to extend social security coverage, maintain workers’ databases and promote skill development and employment opportunities. The memorandum also sought mandatory labour licences for private agencies, contractors and interstate migrant workers operating in the state. Sonam said the union had proposed strict verification procedures and mandatory Inner Line Permit (ILP) checks before issuing work permits to migrant labourers. Highlighting wage-related issues, he appealed for revision of minimum wages for graduate and postgraduate employees engaged as casual or contingency workers, stating that remuneration should be linked to educational qualifications and skill levels. The union also demanded mandatory implementation of Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) provisions in all private, public and government establishments, including for contractual, casual and contingency employees. Raising concern over the non-functioning of the State Advisory Committee under the Arunachal Pradesh Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board (APB&OCWWB), Sonam called for immediate reconstitution of the committee to ensure effective implementation of welfare schemes. The council further pressed for formation of the Arunachal Pradesh Motor Transport Workers Welfare Board under the Code on Social Security, 2020, to provide insurance, pension, medical assistance and emergency support to transport workers. Appealing for prompt government action, Sonam said the demands were raised in the larger interest of workers’ welfare and social security in Arunachal Pradesh.

Sain informed that the Election Commission of India (ECI), vide notification dated May 14, 2026, has launched the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Arunachal Pradesh, necessitated after a gap of nearly two decades due to large-scale demographic changes, urbanisation, migration, and concerns over electoral roll accuracy, including removal of duplicate, deceased and foreign electors. Arunachal Pradesh has 2,288 polling stations.
