Young storytellers bring Amar Chitra Katha heroes to life in Tezu

TEZU :  Book lovers in Tezu were treated to an engaging evening of storytelling as students from six schools across Lohit district participated in the first Amar Chitra Katha Storytelling Contest, themed “A Hero(ine) I Admire”. Organised by Bamboosa Library and the Forum of Library Activists, the event was held to honour the memory of renowned Amar Chitra Katha scriptwriter Kamala Chandrakant and journalist Mypalli Chandrakant of Mumbai. Students from Classes VI to X captivated the audience with inspiring narratives drawn from the lives of admired personalities. Tezu District Transport Officer Dr Asmi Mega and Government Higher Secondary School No. 2 teacher Arindam Sarkar served as judges for the competition. Addressing the participants, Dr Mega praised their enthusiasm and confidence, saying that experiences gained through such activities would benefit them throughout their lives. Sarkar, a library activist, observed that similar training sessions in schools could significantly strengthen students’ learning and communication skills. Tezu District AIDS Control Officer Bitchey Rijiju, who attended as a special guest, congratulated the participants and encouraged them to speak from the heart rather than rely solely on memorised presentations. Speaking on the occasion, Lohit Youth Library Network Coordinator S. Suresh recalled his five-decade association with Kamala Chandrakant and the guidance she provided during his formative years as a writer. “Kamala aunty was an ever-energetic personality. It was due to her encouragement that I was able to write the story of Kanaklata for an Amar Chitra Katha title in the early 1980s, bringing her inspiring life story to a national children’s publication for the first time,” he said. He added that Chandrakant remained a steadfast supporter of the youth library movement even after the establishment of Bamboosa Library. In the junior category, Solong Krong of Nimkay Vidya Niketan secured first place. The second prize was jointly awarded to Ome Olung Tatak and Kalung Odi, both from Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya (VKV) Sunpura, while Rehanso Kathak of Nimkay Vidya Niketan finished third. In the senior category, Arpita Ram of Government Higher Secondary School No. 1 won first prize for her narration on Dr Varghese Kurien. Kanyan Jami Kham of VKV Sunpura secured second place, while Asni Yun of VKV Tafrogam finished third. Earlier, senior volunteer and storyteller Manisha Halai proposed the vote of thanks. She expressed gratitude to Maharishikaa Preeti of Goa, daughter of Kamala Chandrakant, for sponsoring the annual contest in memory of her parents. Halai also commended teachers and parents for encouraging students to participate in creative activities such as storytelling, noting that such a contest was being organised in Tezu after nearly a decade.

Our agitation will continue until education minister resigns: CJP founder

CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR : Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke said on Sunday his agitation over alleged irregularities in examinations and recruitment tests will not stop until Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns. Dipke also said their protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Saturday was largely successful, with around 7,000 people participating in it, and added that the movement would now expand nationwide. The CJP founder reached his residence in the MIDC Waluj area in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district on Sunday morning and was welcomed by his family members. Later, speaking to reporters, Dipke said the agitation undertaken by the Cockroach Janata Party will not stop until Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns. ”The protest we staged (at Jantar Mantar) was successful, as 6,000 to 7,000 people attended it. This agitation will go nationwide. We won’t step back till Dharmendra Pradhan resigns,” he asserted. Hundreds of protesters gathered at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Saturday under the banner of the CJP, demanding Pradhan’s resignation over alleged irregularities in examinations and recruitment tests, with Dipke delivering the message not to be “scared”. At a press conference later in the national capital, CJP spokespersons announced that they will wait for a week either for the Centre to sack Pradhan or his voluntary resignation, after which they would launch a countrywide protest. Dipke, who called for the protest, arrived in Delhi from the United States on Saturday morning, walking out of the airport carrying a copy of B R Ambedkar’s autobiography. After receiving permission from the Delhi Police, he reached Jantar Mantar. Protesters, armed with posters demanding Pradhan’s resignation, were seen wearing cockroach masks, which were being distributed at the venue. Besides demanding the education minister’s resignation, the protesters also raised slogans demanding that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stop indulging in “Hindu-Muslim” politics, and hailed the motherland with “Bharat Mata ki Jai” slogans. Unlocking Northeast: EU eyes long-term economic partnership; ‘Team Europe’ delegation to visit Assam on June 8-9

NEW DELHI : The European Union is eyeing a long-term trade and investment partnership with India’s Northeastern region to unlock its economic potential, focusing heavily on green energy, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, tea, and agri-food processing. A high-level ‘Team Europe’ delegation will arrive in Guwahati on Monday for a two-day visit, aiming to foster deeper economic collaboration with the eight Northeastern states: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura. This initiative aligns with the priorities established under the comprehensive strategic agenda agreed upon during the EU-India summit in January. The delegation’s visit signals a new chapter in EU-India collaboration, with a shared vision to unlock the North-East’s economic potential through innovation, sustainability, and inclusive growth, the EU’s New Delhi mission said. The EU delegation will comprise envoys and senior representatives from EU member states, including EU Ambassador Herve Delphin, alongside European business representatives. “North-East India and Assam at its core, has enormous potential – its resources, its skilled workforce – and is already one of the fastest growing regions of India by GDP,” Delphin said. The Team Europe ambassadors will engage in a bilateral meeting with Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while a business delegation led by the Federation of European Businesses in India (FEBI) will also hold discussions with state officials to identify trade and investment opportunities, the EU said. The delegation will also participate in the ‘Blue Valleys: Building ecosystems and value chains between India and Europe’ workshop on Tuesday organised by the Assam government, which will bring together European and Indian businesses to explore partnerships in sustainable value chains, industries and innovation. “Through initiatives like Blue Valleys, we’re not just discussing cooperation, we’re building real, long-term business to business partnerships that will drive growth for both the EU and India,” Delphin said. “While the general contours to strengthen the EU-India ties have been finalized at the EU-India summit, it will have to take roots at the state level. The EU has a long-standing engagement with Assam and we are encouraged by the advancements we’re seeing through initiatives like the Blue Valley,” he said. The visit will also see the launch of Assam’s first Blue Valley Cluster, a new industrial hub focused on fragrances, flavours and food processing. This 4P (public-private-people-partnership) cluster will seek to connect Europe, North-East India, and Bhutan, promoting innovation, research, sustainable manufacturing, and business collaborations, according to the EU. This pilot project, led by the Assam government, is aligned with the Blue Valleys initiative which was introduced at the 2026 EU-India Summit, it said. The Blue Valley aims to promote industrial clusters, MSME linkages, and sector-specific value-chain integration between the EU and India, while ensuring economic growth and environmental sustainability. Key sectors identified under this initiative include clean energy, natural ingredients, bamboo-based industries, eco-friendly textiles, biotech, wellness, and smart manufacturing. By combining funding, skills development, and sustainability standards, the initiative seeks to create scalable business models that benefit local communities and connect them to European markets, the EU said in a statement. “The visit will focus on value chains across sectors where Europe and the State of Assam and the region as a whole share strong synergies, including renewable and green energy, sustainable urban infrastructure, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and electronics manufacturing, tea and agri-food processing, flavours and fragrances, and AYUSH,” it said. In addition to meetings and the Blue Valleys event, the EU delegation will visit Tata Electronics’ new semiconductor plant. This visit also highlights the importance of EU-India digital partnership under the EU-India Trade and Technology Council (TTC) and will give European investors a closer look at Assam’s business environment, infrastructure, and industry potential, the EU said. NTA releases NEET-UG 2026 re-exam city intimation slip; test on June 21

NEW DELHI : The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Sunday released the exam city intimation slip for the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination, scheduled to be held on June 21. Candidates can now check their allotted examination city for NEET-UG 2026. Log in with your application number and password to view and download your slip, the NTA said in a post on X. According to a public notice issued by the agency, the re-examination will be conducted in pen-and-paper mode from 2 pm to 5:15 pm across 551 cities in India and 14 cities abroad. The NTA clarified that the exam city intimation slip is not the admit card and is being issued solely to inform candidates about the city where their examination centre will be located. “This is NOT the Admit Card. It shows only your exam city. The Admit Card will be issued later,” the agency said. It said that all efforts are made by the NTA to give 1st choice city to all students. The agency further urged candidates to stay updated through its official websites for the latest announcements regarding the examination and admit card release. The NEET-UG for admissions into medical courses took place on May 3 this year but was cancelled by the NTA on May 12 amid allegations of paper leak. LPG price hiked again

NEW DELHI :  Domestic cooking gas LPG price has been raised by Rs 29 per cylinder, marking the second increase in three months as state-owned fuel retailers continue to grapple with elevated global energy costs. The price of a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder in Delhi will rise to Rs 942 from Rs 913 with effect from June 7, according to industry sources. The increase follows a Rs 60-per-cylinder hike on March 7 after the conflict in West Asia disrupted global energy supplies and drove up international fuel prices. Industry sources said that the increase had only partly offset losses incurred on domestic LPG sales. State-run oil marketing companies were estimated to be losing about Rs 703 on every LPG cylinder sold before the latest revision, the sources said. The LPG price hike comes amid a broader round of fuel price increases. Petrol and diesel prices have been raised by a cumulative Rs 7.50 per litre since mid-May, while compressed natural gas (CNG) rates have increased by about Rs 6 per kg. Despite the recent increases, oil companies continue to sell petrol and diesel below cost, incurring losses of around Rs 11 per litre on petrol and Rs 33.6 per litre on diesel, according to industry sources. The government has so far avoided a full pass-through of higher international energy prices to consumers, absorbing part of the increase through state-owned fuel retailers as global crude oil and fuel markets remain volatile. Security forces urge Manipur villagers to sensitise youths to not get carried away by violence

IMPHAL : Security forces have asked village authorities and civil society in Manipur’s Ukhrul to sensitise youths to not get carried away by violent incidents in other districts, as they carried out a combing operation a day after three people were killed in a gun attack in Kangpokpi. “To prevent any spillover of recent violence in Kotlen, security forces undertook a combing operation on Saturday in areas around Litan, Mahadev and Sinakeithel” and highway areas in Tangkhul Naga-majority Ukhrul district which shares boundaries with Kuki-majority Kangpokpi district,” police said in a statement. The development came in the wake of the killing of three civilians in a gun attack at Loibol Khullen village in Kangpokpi district on Friday. Police said villages of both communities were patrolled jointly, and bunkers were traced and dismantled. “Village authorities and civil society organisations were approached for their essential support and were assured of the presence of security forces in the area to ward off any threats”, it said. “They were also requested to sensitise their youths not to get carried away by incidents in other areas and indulge in violence near their villages,” police said. Meghalaya village protests India-Bangladesh border fence alignment, fears isolation

PYNURSLA :  Residents of a village along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya held a demonstration on Sunday demanding that the fencing be done along the zero line, else they would get isolated from the rest of the country. Located virtually on the zero line in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district, Lyngkhong is one of the few villages where homes stand just metres from a settlement in Bangladesh. According to international convention, fencing has to be at least 150 yards from the zero line. Locals say the village had been separated from Bangladesh largely by a bamboo fence erected by villagers during the COVID-19 pandemic, and nothing has changed much. On Sunday, they staged a protest and submitted a memorandum to the sub-divisional officer of Pynursla, seeking an immediate halt to the ongoing fencing work. “We are not against border fencing, but we want the fence to be erected at the zero line so that our village remains inside India and within the fenced area,” village head Ramu told PTI. He said the proposed alignment would leave Lyngkhong outside the security barrier, raising concerns about access, security and the future of the settlement. Echoing similar concerns, Rima Khongsdir, a local, said, “If the fence comes up in its present alignment, our village will be left outside. We are worried about our future and want the state government to listen to our concerns and take them up with the Government of India.” Officials said construction of the border fence is continuing as part of efforts to secure the India-Bangladesh frontier. Meghalaya has a 444 km border with Bangladesh, less than 80 km of which remains unfenced due to local issues and difficult terrain. A senior official of the Border Security Force said an outpost has already been established in Lyngkhong to provide security and assistance to residents. “The BSF has a presence in the village and all necessary security measures are being taken to ensure the safety of the residents,” he said. A senior Home Department official said India has taken up with Bangladesh the issue of constructing a single-row fence along the zero line in areas where human settlements are likely to be affected. “Talks have been initiated on the proposal to erect a single-line fence at the zero line. However, the new government in Bangladesh is yet to take a decision on the matter,” the official said. (Source: PTI)

BJP failed to control price rise, fulfil people’s hopes: Gaurav Gogoi

GUWAHATI : Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday attacked the BJP-led state government over rising prices of essential commodities, alleging that it has failed to meet the aspirations of the people. He claimed that the government’s inability to control prices of essential goods and fuel had exposed its “anti-people character”. “Even after the public voted overwhelmingly to bring them to victory, the BJP-led government has failed to meet the hopes and aspirations of the common people,” he told reporters here after a review meeting on the Congress’ poll debacle. He alleged that the state leadership was preoccupied with cabinet-related decisions instead of addressing public concerns. “The CM remains busy trying to appease several disgruntled MLAs, while he has forgotten the suffering inflicted on the public due to price hikes and an uncontrolled market,” he said. Gogoi mentioned that the Congress is reaching out to the people with fresh planning and aims to rebuild a ‘New Congress’ as desired by them. He shared that today’s meeting at Rajiv Bhawan was organised to review the circumstances that led to the Congress’s setback in the Assembly elections, and to discuss how the party will work firmly on behalf of the people in the upcoming by-elections after completing this analysis. “The Congress has dispatched observers to all 126 Assembly constituencies to prepare detailed reports, and discussions are underway with the central leadership,” he said. He added that the party was also strategising for the upcoming by-election in the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency. A bypoll in Nagaon has been necessitated after former Congress leader Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the party ahead of the Assembly elections and later joined the BJP. He subsequently won from the Dispur Assembly seat. (Source: PTI)
