CBSE defends OSM, slashes revaluation fees

NEW DELHI : The Ministry of Education on Sunday dismissed concerns about On-Screen Marking (OSM) affecting students’ scores in CBSE class 12 exams and announced that the revaluation and answer sheet verification charges have been reduced to Rs 100 each. According to officials, the decision has been taken to ease the anxiety of students. They, however, maintained that the OSM is foolproof and a norm followed internationally to conduct transparent evaluation. At a press conference, School Education Secretary, Ministry of Education, Sanjay Kumar said, “98 lakh sheets scanned were for class 12, three levels of security were followed during the process. It was found that despite repeated scanning, there were still some legibility issues because the ink used in some answer sheets was of a very light colour. Even after scanning, those scripts could not be made fully legible.” “In such cases, the examiners were instructed to evaluate the scripts manually and award marks accordingly. More than 13,000 such answer sheets were separately identified and manually checked. After manual evaluation, the marks obtained were entered into the system. “Special attention was given to the security levels and related issues so that the marking carried out through on-screen evaluation remained accurate, completely transparent and fair,” he added. Kumar’s comments came amid concerns being raised by students and parents that the drop in pass percentage in class 12 and scores is due to the OSM, which was conducted for the first time for CBSE board exams. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has reduced the revaluation and answer sheet verification charges to help ease students’ anxiety. “The CBSE has decided this time that if students wish to view their answer sheets, they can do so by paying a fee of Rs 100 instead of Rs 700. If they want verification or validation of the answer sheet, that too will cost Rs 100 instead of Rs 500. If they want any particular answer rechecked, the fee will be Rs 25 per question,” Kumar said. “We have decided that if during re-evaluation, a student’s marks increase, then the amount paid for re-evaluation will be refunded to the student,” he said. Rahul Gandhi slams Pradhan over NEET ‘leak’, CBSE evaluation row; seeks PM’s apology

NEW DELHI : Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday slammed Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for “failing” students across age groups amid the NEET-UG paper leak row and CBSE evaluation concerns, and sought an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for “destroying” the future of lakhs of children. The leader of opposition in Lok Sabha also attacked Pradhan over the rollout of the CBSE’s three-language policy in schools. Questioning the “silence” of Prime Minister Modi on these issues, Gandhi asked him why he was not sacking Pradhan despite repeated paper leaks during his tenure. “First the NEET paper leak affecting 22 lakh students. Then CBSE Class 12 students receiving unexpectedly low marks from a broken OSM system – many losing their college eligibility. “Now lakhs of CBSE Class 9 students suddenly asked to learn a new language from July 1, with no teachers, no textbooks, and Class 6 books being handed to 14-year-olds as a ‘transitional’ fix,” he said in a post on X. Gandhi alleged that Pradhan has “failed” every single age group of students. “Three exams. Three age groups. One Minister. Dharmendra Pradhan ji has not failed once. He has failed every single age group of India’s students at once. “Every announcement plunges children deeper into uncertainty. Every failure goes unpunished. The Education Ministry has become a department of disasters,” Gandhi said. “Prime Minister Modi ji – can you at least apologise to the lakhs of children whose futures you and your Minister have destroyed?” the former Congress chief asked, using the hashtag ‘#SackPradhan’. In another post earlier, Gandhi said, “NEET 2024: Paper leaked. Exam not cancelled. Minister did not resign. CBI set up an investigation. A committee was formed.” “NEET 2026: Paper leaked. Exam cancelled. Minister still did not resign. CBI is investigating again. Another committee will be formed,” he said. The National Testing Agency cancelled the National Eligibility cum Entrance Exam (Undergraduate) held on May 3 amid allegations of irregularities. The re-exam has been scheduled for June 21. “Mr Modi, the country is asking you some questions – answer them! Why are paper leaks happening repeatedly? Why are you silent time and again on this ‘Pariksha pe Charcha’? Why aren’t you dismissing the education minister who keeps failing repeatedly?” The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha asked, using the hashtag “#SackPradhan”. ‘Pariksha pe Charcha’ is a programme in which the prime minister interacts with students, parents and teachers. The initiative aims to reshape the examination experience of students by fostering confidence, positivity, and holistic well-being. On Sunday, the Ministry of Education dismissed concerns about On-Screen Marking (OSM) affecting students’ scores in the class 12 exams, saying it is not new for the CBSE and special attention was given to ensure that the marking remained accurate. Also, concerns have been raised over the implementation of the CBSE’s three-language policy for Class 9 by a section of educationists and parents who have questioned the timing of the changes and the preparedness of schools, as the academic session is already well underway. On Saturday, Gandhi demanded that the prime minister should immediately sack Pradhan or take responsibility himself. He had also alleged that the “BJP-RSS nexus” has destroyed India’s education system and said the hard work of 22 lakh NEET aspirants has gone to waste. “The whole country knows that two days before NEET, its question paper was being distributed on WhatsApp. Dharmendra Pradhan ji says he has nothing to do with the matter. The (Parliamentary) Committee had made recommendations but he put it in the dustbin on the pretext that opposition people were on the committee and that it was of no use,” Gandhi said in a video statement. “The truth is that you (government) have damaged the core of India. This is a nexus of the RSS, the BJP and their people that have been installed in universities, vice chancellors and professors, to mint money,” the former Congress president said, adding that all people involved in the alleged paper leak be put in jail. Pradhan on Friday announced that the NEET-UG re-examination would be held on June 21. He said the medical entrance exam would be computer-based from next year onwards in view of irregularities linked to it. (Source: PTI)

ZIRO : The Fashion and Design Council of Arunachal Pradesh (F&DCAP) on Sunday conducted the first phase of auditions and registrations for “Apatani’s Next Top Model” at the Hija Youth Association Badminton Hall in Hija village. The community-based indigenous modelling platform is being organised under Apatani Fashion Week and the broader vision of Arunachal Fashion Week — The Artisans’ Movement. According to the organisers, the initiative aims to build a professional and sustainable indigenous fashion ecosystem in Arunachal Pradesh by creating opportunities for aspiring models, designers, artisans, photographers, stylists, makeup artists and other creative youths from different communities of the state. F&DCAP stated that Arunachal Pradesh possesses rich indigenous textile traditions, weaving practices and cultural heritage, but organised professional platforms for youths interested in modelling and the fashion industry have remained limited. To address this gap, the council launched community-based fashion and modelling platforms beginning with the Apatani community. The upcoming Apatani Fashion Week will be held during the Dree Festival celebrations from July 1 to 6 at Hija village. The event will feature showcases of indigenous fashion, textiles, handloom traditions and handcrafted products by local designers, artisans and entrepreneurs. As part of the programme, “Apatani’s Next Top Model” will be organised on July 1 and 2 alongside runway presentations and designer showcases, while exhibitions, networking sessions, cultural exchanges and community fashion activities will continue till July 6. The organisers said the initiative forms part of the larger vision of “Arunachal’s Next Top Model”, an indigenous modelling platform created under Arunachal Fashion Week to professionally groom and promote talents from communities across the state. The platform includes multiple categories such as Miss Apatani’s Next Top Model, Mr Apatani’s Next Top Model, Inclusive Category and Adaptive Category to encourage wider participation and representation. F&DCAP stated that all registered participants would automatically become part of the F&DCAP Creative and Models Network, through which they would receive opportunities related to fashion shows, workshops, collaborations, mentorship programmes, exhibitions, campaigns and portfolio development. Selected participants will also undergo professional grooming, runway training and mentorship from fashion professionals and creative experts from Arunachal Pradesh and Northeast India. Speaking on the initiative, Arunachal Fashion Week Founder and Chairperson Yana Ngoba Chakpu said the movement aimed to create opportunities, representation and long-term growth for indigenous creative youths of Arunachal Pradesh. “If we truly want to build a proper fashion industry in Arunachal Pradesh, we must first create the ecosystem ourselves. Every community already has beautiful textiles, artisans, weavers and unique cultural identities. Now it is time to create platforms for youths passionate about modelling, fashion and creativity,” she said. She further stated that the initiative was not limited to fashion shows alone, but also focused on employment generation, entrepreneurship, cultural preservation and youth empowerment through the creative industry. Arunachal Fashion Week Chief Operating Officer Meena Noshi said the platform was envisioned as a long-term movement where aspiring youths could professionally enter the fashion and creative industry while remaining connected to future opportunities through the F&DCAP network. The organisers also announced that the second phase of auditions would focus on youths from rehabilitation centres and vulnerable backgrounds, using fashion and creativity as tools for confidence-building and positive transformation. The audition panel included Yana Ngoba Chakpu, Taba Tapang, Tana Ashwin, Bullo Tajung, Hibu Ollo, Taro Aku, Pura Tabiyo, Kago Tagang, Gianga Ramching Mara and Isha Sindik. Registrations for models, designers, artisans and other creative participants are currently ongoing, the organisers informed.

Key Myanmar-based trafficker arrested in NCB crackdown on cross-border drug syndicate

GUWAHATI : A key Myanmar-based drug trafficker, who was operating as a major supplier of methamphetamine and heroin from across the border, was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), an official statement said here on Sunday. The arrest was made in Delhi on Saturday following extensive surveillance, intelligence development, coordinated interstate coordination and sustained follow-up operations by the NCB in its sustained crackdown on transnational drug trafficking networks operating along the India-Myanmar border, it said. The accused, identified as Thancintuang alias Chintuang alias Tluanga, is the second major Myanmar-based drug supplier nabbed by the NCB in 2026, it added. Chintuang had emerged as one of the most significant traffickers operating along the Myanmar-Mizoram-Manipur-Assam-Tripura corridor, and has been identified as a major international supplier of methamphetamine and heroin from the neighbouring country, the statement said. Investigations revealed his extensive involvement in organising cross-border trafficking networks routing narcotic consignments through Mizoram, Manipur, Assam and Tripura into various parts of India and Bangladesh. He was wanted in multiple cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act by the NCB and several drug law enforcement agencies. Chintuang was also accused in two NDPS cases registered by the Mizoram Police in 2025 relating to the suspected trafficking of methamphetamine and heroin. He was additionally found involved in six NDPS cases registered by the Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Department in 2023, linked to heroin trafficking. Investigations indicated his involvement in illicit drug trafficking networks valued at approximately Rs 115 crore, the NCB statement said. He is linked to seven NDPS cases connected with the Myanmar-Mizoram-Tripura-Assam corridor, and is also suspected in five other cases associated with the Myanmar-Manipur-Assam axis. Chintuang was the prime accused in a 2024 NCB Agartala zone case involving the seizure of 14 kg of methamphetamine and 2.8 kg of heroin. He was also the prime accused in another NCB Agartala zone case of 2025 involving the seizure of 49.1 kg of methamphetamine tablets. During the investigation, several members of the syndicate and close associates of Chintuang were identified and apprehended by NCB, the statement said. It further said financial investigation in the cases led to the identification and temporary freezing of multiple bank accounts linked to the accused persons. Investigations revealed the existence of a highly organised interstate and international drug trafficking network extending from Myanmar to Mizoram, Manipur, Assam, Tripura, and Bangladesh. The syndicate utilised multiple trafficking routes, local facilitators, transport coordinators, hawala channels and financial handlers for smuggling and distribution of methamphetamine and heroin across international and interstate borders. Since 2025, NCB has intensified its network-centric investigations by adopting both “top-to-bottom” and “bottom-to-top” approaches aimed at dismantling entire syndicates rather than merely intercepting consignments, the statement said. In the northeastern region alone, NCB registered 48 NDPS cases in 2025, resulting in the arrest of 116 drug traffickers and seizure of substantial quantities of narcotic drugs valued at approximately Rs 665 crore in the illicit drug market. In 2026, NCB has already registered 31 NDPS cases so far, resulting in the arrest of 54 drug traffickers and seizure of substantial quantities of narcotic drugs during sustained enforcement operations across the region. Assam CM reaffirms commitment to reclaim over 1250 sq km of encroached land

GUWAHATI :  Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday reiterated the NDA government’s commitment to reclaiming encroached land across the state, stating that ground-level operations have already begun as part of the administration’s larger campaign against illegal occupation of land. Taking to X, the Chief Minister said the government remains determined to recover vast stretches of land that it claims have been illegally encroached upon. “NDA 3.0 is committed to reclaiming over 1250 sq km of encroached land in Assam. We are already on the ground working towards realising this promise,” CM Sarma wrote. Along with the post, the Chief Minister also shared a video showing yellow JCB backhoe loaders demolishing structures and clearing large heaps of debris, including wooden planks and metal sheets, in what appeared to be a rural hilly area. Sarma has repeatedly asserted his government’s resolve to intensify eviction and land recovery drives in Assam. On the eve of taking oath as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term, Sarma, on May 11, had declared that the “land, identity and future” of Assam would remain “non-negotiable” under his administration. He had then pledged that the government would free nearly 5 lakh bighas of land from encroachment by significantly scaling up eviction drives during the NDA government’s new term, compared to operations carried out earlier. The Chief Minister had also used social media to announce what he described as a stronger and more aggressive campaign against illegal land occupation in the state. “Assam’s land, identity and future are non-negotiable. After freeing 1.5 lakh bighas of land from encroachment, NDA 3.0 moves ahead with a firm resolve to reclaim 5 lakh more bighas for the people of Assam. Because for us, Jati, Mati, Bheti comes first,” he had posted on X. The slogan “Jati, Mati, Bheti” — referring to community, land and homeland — has remained central to the BJP-led government’s political messaging in Assam, particularly on issues linked to identity and land rights. Meanwhile, CM Sarma has also reiterated the NDA government’s commitment to implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam, stating that every assurance made in the party’s election manifesto would be honoured. Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister said the government was fully committed to carrying forward all promises outlined during the election campaign. “UCC is a part of our election manifesto. So every point in our election manifesto, not only UCC, all that we have mentioned in our election manifesto, we’ll try 100 per cent to implement,” Sarma said. His remarks come amid renewed national discussions surrounding the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in BJP-ruled states. The proposed UCC seeks to replace religion-based personal laws governing issues such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption with a uniform legal framework applicable equally to all citizens, irrespective of religion.
