PM donning Bodo scarf ‘Aronai’ reflects community’s rich heritage: Himanta

GUWAHATI : Prime Minister Narendra Modi donning the traditional Bodo scarf ‘Aronai’ at an official engagement in the Netherlands is a testament to the community’s rich handloom heritage, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday. He expressed gratitude to Modi for ushering in peace and progress in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) of the state. “Aronai reflects the pride and rich handloom heritage of Assam’s Bodo community. Proud to see Adarniya @narendramodi Ji carrying it with grace on the global stage in the Netherlands,” Sarma said in a post on X. Modi had worn the Aronai around his neck while addressing the Indian diaspora in The Hague. He had reached the Netherlands on Friday on a two-day visit as part of a four-nation trip to Europe. “Grateful to our beloved PM for ushering in a new era of peace and prosperity across Bodoland,” Sarma added. The chief minister was referring to the 2020 Bodo Peace Accord, which increased power and scope of the autonomous council administering BTR and effectively brought to an end the decades-old insurgency problem in the area. Assamese flick ‘Aakuti’ to have world premiere at New York Indian Film Festival

GUWAHATI : ‘Aakuti’ (Longing), an Assamese feature film on the emotional journey of an eight-year-old girl haunted by her mother’s loss, has been chosen at the New York Indian Film Festival, where the movie will have its ‘World Premiere’, the filmmaker said on Sunday. The film marks the directorial debut feature of Snigdha P Roy, and it was also selected for ‘Film Bazaar Recommends’ section at Waves Film Bazaar 2025. Written, directed and edited by Roy, ‘Aakuti’ is part of the official selection of the New York Indian Film Festival 2026 (NYIFF), and it will be screened on May 30. Commenting on the development, Roy said, “Being selected by the New York Indian Film Festival and nominated alongside some remarkable films is an honour for all of us. It feels like a meaningful acknowledgement of the passion and resilience that went into making the film possible.” ‘Aakuti’ was not an easy film to make, and filmed on a modest budget, it was brought to life by a small team bound by conviction rather than resources, she added. The director co-produced the film with Tanuja P Roy under the banner of PKR Films. The film’s cinematography was done by Chida Bora, sound design by Debajit Gayan and background score by Ashutosh Sohoni. Reflecting on the experience and journey of making ‘Aakuti’, producer Tanuja said, “It is the debut feature from PKR Films, and its journey from inception to the international stage at the NYIFF is a significant milestone for our team.” The film is built on a foundation of minimalistic storytelling and raw human connection, she added. The title role of the film, the child’s character, has been portrayed by Kavisha Mahanta. The film also features Nilim Chetia, Anisha Hazarika, Arun Hazarikа and Ananya Hazarika in lead roles. The 1-hour 34-minute film revolves around Lakhi, who lost her mother when she was infant and now constantly longs for her. To cope with the void, Lakhi fills pages with drawings, trying to imagine her mother’s face, but is left frustrated and heartbroken. Her father, Bishnu, loves her deeply, but Lakhi remains withdrawn, caught in a web of inner turmoil and self-doubt. He tries his best to understand her, to offer comfort, but finds himself falling short. Bishnu leans on a close friendship with a woman, who guides him through his difficulties. They also hope for a life together, but are unable to because of the complexities of their situation. And Lakhi remains unaware of this relationship. ‘Aakuti’ traces the emotional journey of a child and the quiet, and the tender bond between a father and daughter as they try to sail through life. Congress, finally, reads the Kerala verdict

Ten days after the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) registered a landslide electoral victory in Kerala, the party’s high command chose V D Satheesan as the state’s new Chief Minister. The uncertainty that prevailed before the high command picked Satheesan did the party no good. The announcement was delayed because the central leadership backed All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary K C Venugopal, who did not contest the election, while the people clearly favoured Satheesan, who led the alliance to this resounding victory.  By prioritising a coterie’s interests above the party and the people, the leadership risked serious damage, given that Kerala is one of the Congress’s few remaining pockets of influence. Left to themselves, the leaders would have decided against the overwhelming will and verdict of the people. This lack of political judgment is even more striking because Congress has lost states when it imposed chief ministers on the people or removed them from office against public opinion. Its final decision is being hailed as a victory of consensus and the spirit of internal democracy, but the credit should go to the positions taken by the public and the allied parties, the residual good sense of some leaders, and a media consistently critical of this post-results power play. It must be said that even before the euphoria of a massive victory settles, the Congress leadership has lost some credibility. Satheesan was the face of the party and the UDF in the elections. He is not a dynast and is the first from his family to join politics. A leader who rose from the grassroots, the first-time Chief Minister has about three decades of political experience. He is seen by a large section of the cadre as a principled leader who would not cede space to communal interests. Satheesan is also the unlikely politician with a book: a voracious reader with a range of interests. The new Chief Minister will face multiple challenges in office. Financially, Kerala has just managed to stay afloat, while resisting the Centre’s unfriendly policies. The government will need a substantial revenue thrust to implement the five guarantee schemes announced during the campaign. The Lok Bhavan can be expected to be at odds with the government on many fronts. Satheesan may also face opposition from the party’s MLAs and even ministers, given the circumstances of his appointment. The high command must ensure that he gets the full backing in what could also be a crucial term for the party’s national footprint. (Source: DH)

CBSE makes three languages compulsory for Class 9 students from July 1

NEW DELHI : The CBSE has made the study of three languages, including at least two native Indian languages, compulsory for Class 9 students beginning July 1, according to a circular issued by the board. The move is part of the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) alignment of its Scheme of Studies with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023. According to the circular issued on May 15, students opting for a foreign language may do so only as the third language after studying two native Indian languages, or as an additional fourth language. “With effect from July 1, 2026, for Class IX, the study of three languages (R1, R2, R3) shall be compulsory, with at least two languages being native Indian languages,” the circular stated. The CBSE said to keep the focus on learning and reduce any undue pressure on students, no board examination shall be conducted for R3 at the Class 10 level. “All assessments for R3 shall be entirely school-based and internal. The performance of students in R3 will be duly reflected in the CBSE certificate. It is clarified that no student will be barred from appearing in the Class X Board Examinations due to R3. Sample question papers, rubrics for internal assessment will be shared by the Board shortly,” it added. The Board also asked schools to update their R3 language offerings for Classes 6 to 9 on the OASIS portal by June 30. Schools facing a shortage of qualified native Indian language teachers may use interim measures, such as inter-school resource sharing, virtual or hybrid teaching support, engagement of retired language teachers and qualified postgraduates, the circular said. The CBSE further said relaxations would be provided to the Children with Special Needs (CwSN) in accordance with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, while foreign students returning to India may get case-by-case exemptions from the requirement of studying two native Indian languages. ABAK launches ‘Banné Nog-ying’ to preserve Adi women’s cultural identity

Maksam Tayeng PASIGHAT :  In a bid to preserve the traditions and cultural identity of Adi women and inspire younger generations, the Adi Baane Ane Kebang (ABAK) on Saturday launched a distinctive bead garland for Adi women named ‘Banné Nog-ying’ at IGJ Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) conference hall in Pasighat. The ornament was introduced on the lines of the traditional ‘Dudab’ worn by Adi menfolk and is intended to serve as a unique cultural identifier for Adi women. Pasighat East MLA Tapi Darang, who attended the programme as chief guest, lauded the initiative and said the launch of ‘Banné Nog-ying’ would strengthen and preserve the distinct identity of Adi women. Central Donyi-Polo Yelam Kebang president Dr Tajom Tasung described the initiative as a landmark step towards safeguarding the rich traditions and cultural heritage of the Adi community. East Siang Zilla Parishad Chairperson (ZPC) Ruth Tabing Boko said Adi women have traditionally adorned ornaments such as Nog, Sondorong, Maduli, Tampilang and Sumbi. She noted that ‘Banné Nog-ying’ would particularly be associated with unmarried Adi women, similar to the traditional identity represented by ‘Banbo Reyang’ among unmarried Adi men. ABAK president Yamek Mize Taggu, general secretary Opung Jamoh Dai and vice-president Oming Jamoh Pertin highlighted the significance of the initiative, which received approval from the Adi Baane Kebang and Opin Buang Council on May 2 this year. The organisers said ‘Banné Nog-ying’ is a recreation of ‘Nog’, a traditional female ornament of the Adi tribe, redesigned to preserve its cultural significance while making it suitable for contemporary use. The ornament was conceptualised by ABAK general secretary Opung Jamoh Dai and crafted by Yato Jamoh Nobeng, while the name was coined by Dambuk Head Gaon Burah Maktel Pertin of Lower Dibang Valley district. According to the organisers, the ornament is intended to honour women, friends and distinguished female guests with dignity, respect and cultural pride. Speaking to media persons after the event, Opung Jamoh Dai, former ABAK president Olen Megu Damin and ABAK patron Osor Moyong Tayeng said the ornament had been specially designed by incorporating elements of traditional Adi women’s attire, particularly ‘Adi Gale Amik’ bead patterns. They also appealed to other tribal communities to respect the traditional identity and cultural heritage of Adi women. The programme was attended by Pasighat Municipal Council Deputy Chief Councillor Kamin Lego, ABAK members and representatives from several Adi-inhabited districts, including East Siang, Siang, Upper Siang, Lower Dibang Valley, Namsai and Shi-Yomi. The initiative is being seen as an important effort towards strengthening cultural identity, traditional awareness and community unity among the Adi people.
