They noted that several members of the Fellowship Arunachal Recovery Community have successfully overcome addiction and are now motivating others to lead substance-free lives, while timely intervention by teachers and parents has helped protect children from abuse in several instances. Students, teachers and members of the School Management Committee participated enthusiastically in the programme and took the “Together We Can: Safeguarding Our Children from Drugs & Abuse” pledge. The District NCORD Committee announced that similar awareness programmes will be conducted every Saturday across schools in West Siang district, with at least two schools to be covered every month. Besides anti-drug awareness, sessions in primary and middle schools will also focus on child safety, including “Good Touch-Bad Touch”, the POCSO Act and other child protection issues. The initiative is part of the committee’s sustained efforts to build a drug-free society and ensure a safe and secure environment for children and youth across the district. (DIPR)

The cumulative impact of floods, landslides and other rain-related disasters over the past several days, however, remains significant. A total of 305 villages across 222 circles have been affected, impacting an estimated 92,294 people across the state, the SEOC said. So far, four people have died, 21 have been injured, and two remain missing as heavy rain triggered flash floods and landslides, causing extensive damage to houses, roads, bridges and public infrastructure, officials said. Two women swept away in a flash flood in Keyi Panyor are still missing despite continued search operations, they said. One person died in a landslide at Sarti village in Anjaw district on June 28, while the remaining three fatalities occurred in the flash flood that struck Possa in Keyi Panyor district on June 24. The disasters have also caused extensive damage to residential properties, with 498 houses, including kutcha, pucca and huts — fully, severely or partially damaged, officials said. Agriculture and horticulture have suffered significant losses, with 330.2 hectares of crop area affected, including 181.7 hectares under horticulture and 143 hectares under agriculture. Around 1,010 hectares of forest area have also been impacted, they said. The Hoj-Potin stretch of NH-13 in Keyi Panyor district remains closed due to extensive damage caused by the June 24 flash flood, with a detailed assessment still underway, officials said. Relief measures continued in the affected districts. Two relief camps remain operational in Keyi Panyor, where 150 displaced people are being sheltered. The state civil aviation department on Saturday carried out four helicopter sorties, airlifting 11.5 metric tonnes of rice from Pasighat Advanced Landing Ground to Koyu in Lower Siang district. Officials said restoration of roads, power supply, drinking water facilities and other essential services was continuing. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said weather conditions had improved considerably across the state, with no weather warning issued for Sunday. However, from July 6 onwards, the IMD has issued a yellow watch for parts of eastern and central Arunachal Pradesh, including Anjaw, Lohit, Changlang, Tirap and Longding districts, forecasting heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places. Similar conditions are likely to persist in some districts on July 7 and 8, while most parts of the state are expected to receive scattered rainfall. (Source: PTI)

State govt deploys helicopter to airlift essential supplies to areas cut off by flood

ITANAGAR : Flash floods and massive landslides triggered by heavy rains around a week ago cut off several remote villages in Arunachal Pradesh from the rest of the state, requiring the administration to deploy a commercial helicopter to supply emergency food and medical supplies to the deluge-hit areas. Collapsed bridges and road blockades due to landslides at multiple locations left Rotte, Rame, Loglu, Lipin, Mane, Tene, Sipu, Kakki, Kadu, Rina, Sido, and Korang in Lower Siang completely isolated. Responding to an urgent requisition from the Lower Siang deputy commissioner, the authorities pressed a state-owned Skyone Airways Mi-172 helicopter into service, an official report said. The helicopter is scheduled to operate multiple sorties on Saturday to transport essential food and critical medical aid from the Pasighat Advanced Landing Ground in East Siang district to the Koyu helipad in Lower Siang district. According to the Directorate of Civil Aviation’s plan, the chopper will depart Naharlagun at 8 m on Saturday and arrive at the Koyu helipad an hour later to initiate the emergency relief operations. Civil aviation officials said administrative, disaster management, and food safety officials in Itanagar, Pasighat, Likabali, and Nari have been kept on high alert to coordinate the seamless offloading and distribution of the ration packages to the affected people. Meanwhile, the Lower Siang district administration has stepped in to facilitate clearance of debris along the Likabali-Basar-Bame stretch of the Akajan-Likabali-Bame Road. Likabali Additional Deputy Commissioner Mokar Riba said a massive landslide near Brahmaputra View near Garu has necessitated immediate clearing operations. To ensure the safety of commuters and allow uninterrupted restoration work, the district administration has introduced a strict, time-bound traffic regulation schedule for all vehicular movement on the Akajan-Likabali-Bame Road, the officer said. “Any violations of the order will invite strict legal action under relevant provisions,” the order read. The road serves as a lifeline for seven border districts of Arunachal Pradesh and is also of immense strategic importance for national security, as it facilitates the seamless transit of security personnel and equipment to the border regions. Parliament’s Monsoon session from Jul 20

NEW DELHI : The Monsoon session of Parliament will be held from July 20 to August 13 amid dramatically altered political equations after the recent assembly elections. The 25-day session with 19 sittings comes as cracks in the opposition ranks seem to be widening, with beleaguered Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Shiv Sena (UBT) facing rebellion and the Congress parting ways with the DMK to join hands with the TVK to form a government in Tamil Nadu. The BJP’s victories in West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry assembly polls have given a fresh boost to the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) after the last session ended in disappointment as a Constitution amendment bill to implement reservation for women in legislatures in 2029 and increase the number of seats in the Lok Sabha was defeated in the Lower House. The government is now redrafting the bill to possibly increase Lok Sabha seats of all states uniformly by 50 per cent. The population-linked increase in seats has been a major concern for southern parties. The aftermath of the rebellion in TMC and Shiv Sena (UBT) will also play out in the forthcoming session. A decision by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on the demands of 20 TMC and six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs seeking recognition as separate groups is awaited. In the Rajya Sabha, after newly elected and re-elected MPs took oath, the political numbers further tilted in favour of the ruling NDA. Three rebel TMC MPs from the Upper House have quit and bypolls will help the BJP gather more strength in the Rajya Sabha. The long-standing alliance between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Congress came to an end in the aftermath of the high-stakes Tamil Nadu assembly elections held in May. In a post on X, Rijiju said that, on the recommendation of the government, President Draupadi Murmu has summoned both the Houses of Parliament for the Monsoon Session 2026. “The Session will commence on 20 July, 2026 and continue till 13 August, 2026 for meaningful debate, discussion and decisions on issues of national importance,” he said.
