Monyul FC launches ambitious grassroots football mission

ITANAGAR : In a push to strengthen grassroots football and create opportunities for underprivileged children, Monyul Football Club (MFC), one of Arunachal Pradesh’s premier football outfits, has announced the launch of a long-term football development initiative that will begin in Arunachal Pradesh before expanding to other parts of the country. The club’s first programme has been launched in collaboration with Jhamtse Gatsal, the internationally acclaimed Tawang-based community that supports children through childcare centres and residential care facilities. Under the initiative, Monyul FC will provide free football coaching and sports equipment to children from the community beginning this summer. The club said it would deploy its best youth development coaches to ensure that participants receive quality training, professional guidance and meaningful exposure to the sport from an early age. “We are now all set to offer free coaching and equipment to children’s communities, starting this summer. Monyul will put its best youth development coaches into this programme so that young players get the best possible exposure,” Tsering Khandu, the club’s captain said in a statement. Founded in 2023, Monyul FC has quickly emerged as one of Arunachal Pradesh’s most promising football clubs. The club competes in the state’s premier football competitions and has gained recognition for its efforts to promote football among youth while building a professional football culture in the region. Club officials said the latest initiative reflects a broader vision of using football as a tool for social transformation, youth empowerment and community development. “Our goal is to create opportunities for young talents, promote healthy lifestyles and contribute to the growth of grassroots football in Arunachal Pradesh and India. This is only the beginning of a larger mission,” the statement said. The club plans to gradually expand the programme to more communities across Arunachal Pradesh and eventually across the country, combining coaching, mentorship and access to sporting resources for children who may otherwise have limited opportunities to participate in organised sports. The initiative has already received encouragement from football enthusiasts and community leaders, who view it as a positive step towards nurturing future sporting talent while promoting inclusivity and social development through football. With grassroots development increasingly seen as the foundation of sporting success, Monyul FC’s latest effort aims to ensure that children, irrespective of their background, have an opportunity to dream, compete and excel on the football field.

‘Self-proclaimed milestone’: Cong slams PM as he surpasses ‘Nehru record’

NEW DELHI : The Congress on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he may have passed a “self-proclaimed and dubiously invented” milestone but he is a “millstone” around India’s neck, presiding over the “murder of democracy”. The opposition party’s attack came as Modi became India’s longest continuously serving elected prime minister. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said Jawaharlal Nehru became prime minister of India on August 15, 1947 presiding over a stellar Cabinet – the likes of which have rarely been seen in the world. Over the next five years, modern India came into being, he said on X. “Over 560 princely states were integrated peacefully into the Indian Union, the Constitution of India was debated and adopted, zamindari was abolished, reservations for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes were put in place, a number of multipurpose irrigation-cum-power projects were launched, the infrastructure for science and technology capability was established (including in nuclear energy), and India emerged as a force in global affairs,” Ramesh said. Electoral rolls bearing 170 million registered voters were prepared to ensure universal adult franchise and free India’s first General Elections were held between October 1951 and February 1952, he said. “The 1947-52 record of achievements of India with Nehru as PM and in which stalwarts like Sardar Patel, Dr Ambedkar, Dr Rajendra Prasad, C Rajagopalachari, and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad played such a pivotal role is now sought to be erased by Mr Modi who has a pathological fixation on Nehru,” the Congress general secretary in-charge communications alleged. “He (Modi) may have passed a self-proclaimed and dubiously invented milestone today but he is a millstone around India’s neck, presiding as he is over the Murder of Democracy in India,” Ramesh alleged. The very same establishments of democracy — an independent Election Commission and a sacrosanct voter list — are now threatened, he claimed. “Scientific temper has been erased through the destruction of our educational institutions as exposed most recently by the NEET-CBSE scandals. Reservations for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes have been weakened through privatisation and nefarious instruments like ‘Not Found Suitable’,” Ramesh said. And while Nehru won in 1952, 1957, and 1962 with a hugely decisive majority, Modi “did not secure even a simple majority by a considerable margin in 2024 and had to hurriedly convene a NDA meeting bypassing the BJP Parliamentary Party to anoint himself as PM,” Ramesh said, adding that “2024 was most certainly not a mandate for him”. Modi on Wednesday became the longest continuously serving elected prime minister of India, breaking the record of Nehru. Modi crosses the record of Nehru’s 4,399 days in power as an elected prime minister following the 1952 general elections. Nehru’s stint from 1947 to 1952 was as head of an interim government as elections were not held till 1952. Former prime minister Indira Gandhi had a tenure of 14 years, more than that of Modi, but her prime ministership was not uninterrupted. By surpassing Nehru’s 4,399-day record, Modi became the longest-serving elected prime minister of India. On May 26, 2014, Modi took charge as India’s prime minister with a landslide victory. He got re-elected with a bigger mandate in 2019 and his second term began on May 30 of the same year. His third consecutive term started on June 9, 2024.

Meghalaya suspends state-funded foreign trips of ministers, officials for six months

SHILLONG : The Meghalaya government on Wednesday put on hold all state-funded foreign visits by ministers, MLAs and officials for six months as part of an austerity drive aimed at rationalising expenditure and prioritising development spending, a notification stated. The decision, taken in the larger public interest, comes amid growing global economic uncertainties, including rising geopolitical tensions and pressure on foreign exchange resources, they said.   According to the notification by the general administration department, the governor has ordered that all official foreign visits of ministers, MLAs and officials of the state government, whether permanent or contractual, shall be on hold for six months. The notification said the measure has been imposed “in public interest and for complying with austerity measures”. As a result of the decision, eight proposed foreign study visits and exposure programmes involving around 63 to 68 officials and representatives from various departments have been deferred. The postponed programmes were related to governance, livestock development, climate-resilient water management, healthcare systems, project implementation, environmental management and electoral administration. The proposed visits were to destinations including the United Kingdom, Denmark, the United States, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and Argentina. Officials said the temporary suspension should not be viewed as a withdrawal from international engagement or knowledge exchange. “Rather, it reflects a temporary pause in expenditure-bearing overseas travel while ensuring continued focus on governance priorities within the state,” an official said. The government said many of the intended learnings and collaborations would continue to be pursued through virtual engagements, technical partnerships and other avenues during the restriction period. The notification stated that the order would apply to all foreign visits funded by the Meghalaya government and would cover both permanent and contractual employees. However, it clarified that the restriction would not apply to visits fully funded by the government of India or entirely sponsored by multilateral development banks, subject to obtaining the necessary political clearance from the Ministry of External Affairs. Officials said the move is aimed at curbing non-essential expenditure and ensuring that public resources remain available for development programmes and other priority commitments of the state government. Rs 700 cr economic opportunity for Assam in next 5 yrs in ‘concert tourism’: Report

GUWAHATI : A structured pipeline of marquee live events could generate over Rs 700 crore in cumulative economic impact within Assam over the next five years, a report released here on Wednesday claimed. It was based on a survey conducted by BookMyShow, an online entertainment ticketing platform, in collaboration with Assam Tourism Development Corporation Ltd (ATDC) and EY-Parthenon, a global strategy consulting arm of Ernst and Young (EY). The report, ‘The Assam Blueprint: Turning Live Music Economy into a Tourism Multiplier’, examined the economic, tourism, workforce and cultural impact of live entertainment in Assam following a concert by American singer-rapper Post Malone in December last year. It comes days after the announcement of another concert by the legendary rock band Guns N’ Roses in the city in November, as part of the state government’s ‘concert tourism’ policy. Unveiling the report at a press conference here, ATDC managing director Kumar Padmapani Bora said the report was compiled after extensive talks with various stakeholders. As per the report, a structured pipeline of marquee live entertainment events could generate over Rs 700 crore in cumulative economic impact within the state over the next five years. The Post Malone concert generated an estimated Rs 43 crore in total economic impact, including Rs 32 crore injected directly into Assam’s economy through attended spending and another Rs 5 crore in GST revenue. The concert attracted approximately 20,000 attendees, with 53 per cent coming from outside Guwahati, with people from over 200 cities and towns across the country attending it. The report further revealed that for every Rs 100 spent on a concert ticket, attendees spent an additional Rs 899 on accommodation, travel, dining, shopping and local services. Hotels in the city reported a nearly 30 per cent increase in occupancy during the concert weekend, local transport operators experienced more than 50 per cent growth in ride demand, restaurants and cafés recorded over 33 per cent growth in walk-ins, while retail businesses witnessed more than 30 per cent higher footfalls during the event. Bora said the live events are part of the state’s concert tourism policy, adopted last year. “For Assam, the concert economy is not just about entertainment; it is about tourism, culture, youth engagement and economic growth working together. Our objective is to build a facilitative ecosystem where large events become repeatable opportunities that bring visitors into the state, create local employment and showcase Assam to national and global audiences,” he said. As per the policy, at least three marquee live events, featuring national or international performers, will be organised, Bora said. “A concert arena will also be developed in Guwahati in the next two to three years,” he added. Naman Pugalia, chief business officer, Live Events, BookMyShow, also present at the press meet, said the deep-rooted connection of North East region with music serves as a catalyst for hosting concerts here. “The Post Malone concert demonstrated how globally benchmarked live experiences can generate value far beyond the venue, creating impact across tourism, hospitality, local enterprise and employment,” he said. The successful hosting of the event was also a demonstration of the synchronisation of government, industry and local stakeholders, Pugalia added. Raghav Anand, partner and leader, Media and Entertainment, EY-Parthenon, speaking virtually at the press conference, said, “What makes Assam particularly exemplifying is not just the headline economic impact, but the ecosystem behind it — clear policy direction, institutional coordination, infrastructure investment and a commitment to measuring outcomes.” “When live entertainment is treated as economic infrastructure rather than a one-off spectacle, it becomes a repeatable engine for tourism, employment and regional growth,” he added. The Assam government had approved a policy in May last year for promoting ‘concert tourism’, and also joined hands with Bigtree Entertainment, which operates BookMyShow, to organise various national and international musical concerts in the state.
